This past week was my last one at the Language School. It was also their last week of term. So there was photos galore (I felt like a celebrity). And for an outing a few teachers (me included) took our students to laser tag in Fremantle. Fun stuff! I won my game! Yay! Though my team lost horribly, I had the highest points cause I was busy attacking the opposing team's unguarded headquarters. I had a few of them over to my house afterwards too. I think it was a thrill for them to be in a teacher's house! Ha. For my final class on the last day, they asked to go for coffee. I relented, seeing that two of them were falling asleep anyway and the rest were going to as well if I didn't do something exciting. So instead of a regular lesson, we trooped down to the coffee shop. I got them speaking English to one another, so that was lesson accomplished. I felt rather nostalgic clearing out my desk and saying goodbye to people. It's been a good run. But with this chapter closing, a new one begins.
On Tuesday (as Monday's a public holiday), I will begin full-time at the College. 13 to 16 year olds, here I come! I really want to make a difference in these kids' lives. It's a question of how, as I try to tame the lions and entertain the monkeys. Yes, class feels like a zoo sometimes. But I am determined to run a well-disciplined zoo!
It's funny how one of my biggest challenges at the Language School was to get my students to speak up and now one of biggest challenges at the College will be to get them to stop talking! The irony!
(Powerful things have happened at the previous weekend too. But perhaps I will write about them another time when the dust has settled and I have time to reflect on what it all means.)
