Vampire Academy

In my brief paean to Detective Diaz of Brooklyn 99, I mentioned I had originally visited the "Kiss My Wonder Woman" blog in the hopes of finding a review of Vampire Academy. Well, she's got one up now. And the teal deer version is it's worth seeing.

So we've got a heartwarming story about female friendship overcoming all obstacles, some kickass vampire mythology and a really scary overarching plot, as well as teenage cattiness and some attractive love interests. What are we missing? Oh yeah, humor. Well, don't worry. This movie is funny. Really funny. Like actually laugh funny. Mostly down to Rose and her quippy remarks, but I'm okay with that. Rose is a cool character. I like her. I like how she can't not snark. And it's really fun to watch a movie with this much going on that doesn't take itself too seriously. It's having a good time, and it wants you to do the same.

Spoiler warning: the review has some very minor plot spoilers.

Sadly, the movie seems to be tanking. The critic rating at Rotten Tomatoes is a lowly 9%. But audience approval is 77%. Why the huge difference? KMWW's theory is that the reviewers are unhappy that it's not another The Hunger Games. I don't know if that's true, but if it is that pisses me off. I hate it when a movie (or book, or RPG or whatever) gets panned not for failing on its own merits, but because it isn't something else that the reviewer wanted instead.

So, my two or three faithful readers, go see it! Now, while you still can! IF you still can. It's already gone from my local theater.

ETA: the Lennox 24 still has a single 2pm showing. That's not too far away. I will be there!

ETA #2: Farther away than I thought. =P  I didn't get down there until 2:15 and why was there that much traffic on a Saturday anyway? It's showing at the same time tomorrow, so I will see it then.

ETA #3: I swear there's a conspiracy against me seeing this movie. Yesterday it was rush hour traffic at 2pm on a Saturday, today it's "we totally lied about our showtimes, it was actually at 1:05, ha ha".
