I've noticed lately that my suspension of disbelief is broken, especially for movies. It still works pretty well for books, but not perfectly. Here's what I mean (this specific movie is Spiderman 2) - when I'm watching a movie, I have a hard time getting lost in the movie without constantly saying things like "Couldn't you just OPEN the door ( Read more... )

naw, i do the same thing... i once horrified someone by saying that i thought "night of the lepus" was more plausible than "pretty woman."

it's not your suspension of disbelief that's broken, it's your request for reality within the frame of disbelief.

I'm really bad about that, too, sometimes.

Paul calls it "the dumbing down of America" ... and the film and TV industry contribute quite a bit. More and more I see things in movies and on TV that just blow the top off the bullshit meter ... because they don't expect the average American to think about things like physics, etc. Either that, or the folks making fims really don't know anything about basic physics, chemistry, engineering and/or don't have any common sense. Oddly enough, medical drama has been getting better about this same sort of thing ... Weird.
Just my .02 worth ...
