for as non-traditional a lifestyle as i've chosen, i do tend to cling to the rituals i identify as mine. which just makes it hurt that much more when they start to disintegrate. we used to do thanksgiving with my family and christmas with his, every year, like clockwork - i never realized what a privilege it was not to have to negotiate over who went where when. but thanksgiving has gone to hell in a bucket; unless my father and i reconcile, which seems deeply unlikely from where i stand now, we'll never do that again. and now christmas is being cut in half ( ... )
