This post is going to be somewhat different than what you usually read and what I usually write. It's about sex education, and is mostly a pie-in-the-sky look at the way sex ed might be if we actually thought about it as grownups for a change. The impetus for this post came from a few recent discussions I've had with people, and some long-ago ( Read more... )

It is kinda odd how inadequate sex ed is in school (my high school had an abstinance only policy, too) and the odd ways one finds out how it really does work.

Instance, my friend had no idea there was actual movement involved. She knew what went where but just thought it stopped at that. Her education happened when on a school trip we all had a free porn channel at the hotel (the teachers were less than thrilled to find out that all of our rooms had this channel - that's what they get for booking a hotel in Newark). I think that was a sex ed experience for the entire chorus group. :)

I'm lucky enough my older sister worked for an OB-GYN and would pick me up from my Christian day school a few days a week around 3 and we'd go back to her office, I'd camp out in the break room and do my homework and inevtiably, when I was done, started reading thru the random pamphlets and stuff... and when I had a question, a nurse, doctor, midwife, PA, lab tech, etc., would probably be in there and I could ask for an explanation. The flipside was most of my friends came to ME for answers. And, well, while I was glad to share what I knew, I'm damn sure that a kid who is just learning isn't a great source for accurate information. :/

Of course, I think my sister did this on purpose since she got bit in the ass bad as a young naive 18 year old no longer in the sheltered home but the rather open world of college...
