I just had the remains of a tooth taken out. Really, it wasn't too terribly painful, and now I've taken one hydrocodone and I'm pretty much fine. I just have a bit of soreness and a disinclination to move. This is NOTHING compared to the pain and misery I was feeling this May ( Read more... )

I'm curious - why would a dentist need to know if you've had any joint replacements? They were very specific about that one question.

That would have been a great question for a doctor!

interestingly I just got that same question at my pre-op abuse session along with a string of others- apparently they were interested in whether or not I snore too

Lemme see what I can find. I know that dentists have to be careful about infection because the drainage from the mouth goes essentially straight into the heart -- this is why people with heart murmurs or conditions, even very minor ones, have to take antibiotics before dental work. My suspicions would be that there is some interaction either between medications commonly given post-replacement or with the material of the joint itself, or that it has to do with infection risk being higher. But! I will poke about and see what I can come up with. ;)
