Learning US History

I've been trying to figure out what to do with the older boy for classes. He's going to take some 'fine arts' and foreign language classes at the high school, but I didn't think some of the standard core classes would work well for him. I think he'd be bored out of his mind, and there's his auditory processing issue. He could work through things ( Read more... )

Is there a local community college? Around here they offer a program for high school students to finish their degree by doing both high school level and college level classes at a community college. But maybe you'd just be looking at college level. It's true high school is redundant, but knocking as many college level math classes out of the way would certainly help his entry to college I'd think.

I just had to buy Zumdahl for my oldest for Chem. That was expensive! Even used, it's about the same. Oh well. Younger boy can use it too. I think they also use Zinn for U.S. History. So he's at the Junior level of high school? That's awesome. I can see why he'd get bored with high school. If he's ready for this, then go for it.

My husband actually mentioned homeschooling today on the phone. We're now having problems getting oldest into AP classes because his grade point average isn't what they want. I have no doubt in my mind that he'll score a 4 on the AP U.S. History test. He probably knows just as much as the teacher does and totally more than all the students that would be in his class. Grrr.

If you homeschool, he can still take the exam. And there are tons of books to help study for it. I'd say go for it, if that's what he wants to do.

Older boy will be a freshman this year, but he's already going into algebra II and has a few high school credits in writing from his previous school. They usually have freshmen take 'physical science', but it's a bit silly. If you're going to take chem and physics anyway, it's just an intro and you won't get anything new out of it. May as well just jump into chem and physics. :-)

As a history buff, I salute you for the approach you've decided to take in teaching Korwynn American history. I just wish you didn't have to offer two books at the same time because of ideological bias in both directions. I have to keep reminding myself that in a perfect world, you wouldn't have to take such a step. Since this is obviously not a perfect world, one has to get creative and keep your wits about you when you wade into the ideological minefield that is American history. It certainly doesn't make it any easier when the choice of history textbooks is decided by one state's board of education because of sales numbers. Thank you, Texas....for absolutely (insert several ear-stinging expletives here) nothing.

Here endeth the rant.

Peace.
