It's only a disaster if it looks like one...
There is something that really bugs me about the BP oil spill in the Gulf: the response. Everyone I know, regardless of political affiliation, is hugely disconcerted by the spill and the impending (and now current) effects on the environment and various industries in the Gulf region

Also (why the response to the spill bugs me particularly), a huge majority of the people in this region/ affected by the gulf spill are hard core republicans (Tea Party types) and they're NOT environmentalists, they're just upset about their own backyard being spoiled/ losing their livelihoods. It's just selfishness.
(Which is not to say there are not environmentalists here -- there are. And we are doing our best to turn the conversation from "OMG MY GULF" to "stop using so much fricking oil and plastic and let's get serious about climate change!" But that's a hard row to hoe here...)
