Easy to say when historically you are part of a group that has always been viewed as competant. Sotomayor was near the top of her class at both Harvard and Yale. She is extremely competant. It's just easy to overlook highly competant people because of the color of their skin.

God forbid that minorities be given the same opportunities that white men have always had. If the color of her skin doesn't matter and she's obviously proven herself to be an extremely competent judge, then why is everyone having such a fit about her?

On another blog written by a lawyer, they mentioned the fact that there are so many judges on the court as a way to provide diversity of viewpoint, which is essential in making judicious decisions and viewing all angles of the law. So yes, a diversity of opinion does matter, and if it takes a racial diversity to achieve that, then so be it.

So because she agreed with a the city of New Haven, the lower court ruling and the other judges on her circuit (remember, she wasn't the only one who made this decision, even after it got to her) about a test that was questionable to begin with, she's racist?

If I join a group like Sons of Norway or the German Russian society or the NAACP or La Raza, all of which are groups that promote particular ethnicities, that makes me a racist? I suppose since I attended some meetings for the Society of Black Engineers, that's racist, too.

As to diversity, does simply being black offer a diverse viewpoint?Growing up without the the various privileges that whites receive can potentially offer a different viewpoint ( ... )
