The Hazards of Owning a GPS

Sep 29, 2008 19:39

Now that I have owned and used my new GPS for about six weeks, I've discovered one very bad side effect: I can't give myself directions anymore. No, anytime I think about where I am driving, "Jill's" voice pops in with a "turn right on Washington" or "keep left on I-94".

I feel possessed.

hehehehe

I have one of those things in my car. It told me the wrong directions to a place I sort of knew where I was going. Since I went another way, it confused the hell out of it. It finally came back on when I was about two blocks from my destination. My boy and I screamed out laughing so hard.

I've had similar things happen. What's worse is when it doesn't know that you've gotten off route. Or one day it tells me to go one way to get to a place, and the next day it gives me a different route.

They're fickle creatures, those GPS units...

Heh. If I had one, I'd just keep it on mute.

The problem is that I don't like to look at it when I'm driving...so I need to hear the voice instructions. Gah! :-)

Not that I'm saying "I told you so", but..... mybadattitudes September 30 2008, 02:46:57 UTC
....I warned you that computer-generated voice would be annoying, but did you listen to my sage advice and buy a King's Twin Cities Street Atlas ("The King of Maps")? Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. But that's okay. You're still a friend of mine and I'll continue to give you tidbit after excruciating tidbit from my gushing fountain of unsolicited advice anyway (bwahahahahahahahahaha!) :-)

Peace.

If you can find me a King's Twin Cities Street Atlas that a time-to-arrival minimization function, then I'll consider buying it. I'm guessing, however, that such a nifty function must have some detractor, and the verbal instructions may very well be it. :-)

[laughing] Ah, the spiritual dangers of technology. The Amish and Luddites were right after all!

Next time I get the line about Quakers being "Satan-worshippers", perhaps I will counter by saying, "Yes, and his voice sounds just like my GPS...because that's the little voice I hear in my head all the time."

Then they'll know I've gone nuts. :-)
