It was the first time he got a Valentine card, that wasn’t sent to him by Kitty and/or Sarah. It was the usual heart with the obligatory ‘Be my Valentine’ and the standard “From a secret love”. But Kevin immediately recognized Danny McCullough’s hieroglyphic handwriting, there was just no other possibility.
Kevin didn’t like Valentine’s day. He knew he wasn’t a romantic person, that his sense for original poetry didn’t go past “I love you, please, be true.” But he thought it was nice that Danny went through the trouble. So he thanked Danny for the lovely card by making out with him in Danny’s bedroom and a blowjob later on in Danny’s car… God, he really dldn’t like Valentine’s day.

Scotty would never forget that party. The Valentine’s Day party. Everyone was there. He was here with Steve. Steve was two years older than him and Scotty was so in love with him. As a matter of fact, Scotty was pretty sure that Steve was the only man he’ll ever want. And so he wrote Steve a Valentine’s card, saying how much he loved him, needed him, how complete he felt when he was Steve.
And he had meant every word. Steve. however, disappeared out of Scotty’s sight during the party. Scotty, eagerly waiting for a private moment to be with Steve, went looking for him. He found Steve in the garden, amongst the roses, in the arms of Jim. Scotty left the party, left Steve, left his Valentine’s card in the gutter somewhere between his house and Steve’s house, left a piece of his heart behind, it seemed, because Scotty really couldn’t care about Valentine’s anymore.

The motel is a mess, but it’s cheap and all Scotty can afford. He’s a long way from Oxford, Mississippi. The bruises Mark left on his arms and torso are fading, but the ones on his heart are not. The small tv spews messages of Happy Valentine and how it’s all so romantic. And Scotty just wants to cry.
All he wants is someone to love and be loved in return. Someone who makes him feel as if he’s very special. He switches off the tv. He can’t stand the cheery music anymore. His bag is already packed, he will travel on tomorrow. He looks at his Ranchero parked outside. The only thing that has stayed faithful to him over the last year…. God, he hates Valentine’s day.

“This isn’t happening, this is not really happening.” It seems to be all Kevin can say to himself. If you keep repeating it to yourself, than somehow, somewhere it will be true one day and then this didn’t happen. He parks his car outside his parents’ house and, after a few minutes of debating this with himself, he goes in. Nora and William both look up. Nora from her book, William from his papers. Kevin hears himself lie, but his parents don’t ask anything else.
Only in his old bed, with his old pillow, that smells of his old aftershave does he dare to cry as the images of Hank and Toby keep coming back to him. Hank cheated on him, betrayed him, threw away his love, while in Kevin’s pocket the wedding-ring he planned to give Hank burned. He will never again fall in love and he certainly never again celebrate a Valentine’s day by doing something romantic. Not ever again. Romance.. it just sucks!

He is so lucky, Scotty knows. He has a place in Pasadena, miles away from family, ex-boyfriends and other hurts from the past. He has a new job at Mangopean. His life is just perfect. He doesn’t need a boyfriend or anything. He is very happy spending Valentine’s on his own. He bought himself a box a chocolate and a good book, he has an afternoon off and just wants to spend it alone.
Not very far away, Kevin is glad is it’s a working day for him. Why does everyone think that he’s so lonely? He’s not. He likes being alone. Look at the others. Kitty already called him frantically, because she cannot think of a gift for Jonathan. Joe asked him to babysit because he wants to take Sarah out to a romantic dinner. Tommy cancelled his meeting, because Julie expects him home tonight…. Kevin bought himself a box of chocolates. Will this torture over Valentine’s ever stop?

Scotty wonders why he lets Michelle talk him into these things. He absolutely hates Valentine’s day. But when she mentioned a lawyer named Kevin, his stomach fluttered. It would be too much of a coincidence. But maybe it’s fate… He just wants to have good time, maybe, for once he even gets lucky… He hears Michelle’s voice and turns around.
Kevin tries to not stare at Chad too much. His stomach turns, he feels nauseous. He is furious that Chad flirts so easily with Michelle in front of him, he’s also sad, because it hurts and he’s anxious, this is a blind date. And he hates Chad, the world, his life and above all, he hates Valentine’s day…. Michelle picks him up and he follows her to his ‘date’, who turns around. Their eyes meet…..

Kevin keeps looking at his phone. Why doesn’t Scotty call? Oh, he knows why. Scotty is so romantic and Kevin just isn’t, but he had hoped… He really tried. He is very aware that Scotty was hurt about Valentine last year, when he believed that Kevin had used him to get back at Chad, but he hopes that Scotty can put that behind him. There’s a knock on his door and then Scotty comes into his office, closes the door and leans against it.
“That was the most beautiful rose I ever saw and that little card…. I don’t know what to say.”
“I’m sorry, Scotty, I just suck at these Valentine Day’s things. I always get it wrong.”
“Wrong? Honey, I love it. It’s all I need. To know that you want me in your life and that you love me. Because I love you too.” Their kiss is full of passion. Both of them are starting to figure that maybe Valentine’s isn’t so bad after all.

For once, Kevin is up earlier than Scotty. He quickly makes the coffee and sandwiches. He adds a rose to the delicious food on the tray and careful goes back to their bedroom. Scotty looks at him with so much love in his eyes, that Kevin starts to blush.
“I’m sorry, this is all we have today. With both of us working tonight….” Kevin apologizes.
“Well, breakfast is the most important meal of the day, they say.” Scotty answers practically.
But Kevin recognized the promise in that smile and not long after breakfast, they are in each other’s arms, tired, satisfied, happy with their love-making and with each other. What better way to start Valentine’s Day than in the arms of your husband? If someone would ask them now, how they feel about Valentine’s day, they would have to admit that they just love it.
