The 39 steps
August 20, 2008
It’s 39 days to go until the start of season 3 in America.
There are 39 episodes for season 1 and 2. (Not taking the unaired episode in account or the original pilot, as not everybody can see those)
I started to watch the episodes again. One episode a day.
And then I got the plan to write a small scene for every episode. (Never more than 1 page long)

He cannot remember the last time he had this much fun. Rebecca was such a gifted photographer. She saw beauty, color and light now that he taught her how to look around her. She was a good student. He admired her work and he noticed that he began to enjoy his former work again, due to the freshness that Rebecca brought to the subject.
Added perk was of course that he saw Holly more often. She was gentler now and was taking down her guard a bit. He had not thought it possible, but he was more in love with her now, than he was then. Then his world had been one of vague relationships, he would see through the haze of drugs. He could not remember much of that period in his life, but he remembered Holly. He always remembered her.
The long blond hair he loved to run fingers through. The ice-blue eyes that seemed to look into his soul. He took so many pictures of her, but none of them were adequate enough to convey the freedom he felt when he looked at her…. He loved her then, but he loved cocaine even more. His battle against drugs had been a hard one, but he had won. However, looking back, he realized how much he had lost. Friends, family, prestige, money, the will to make something of himself… and Holly.
When he saw the name Holly Harper in the paper, he hoped it would be ‘his’ Holly. He was surprised to see her own a winery, well, half a winery. On the other hand, he should not have been. He had always known her to be a woman who knew how to organise her life. And he knew her drive to be independent and strong. So he was happy to see her again and lately she seemed glad to be with him again.
Her earlier defense was down, he thought it might have something to do with the fact, that she might fear that he was still a drugs-user. But that she changed when she found out he wasn’t using any more. And there was Rebecca. He was very fond of her too. She was smart and there was a certain connection between them. He didn’t have to tell her things. She instinctively knew what he meant.
And sometimes, like now, when she’s behind her computer, looking at pictures and she looks up at him, it is amazing how much she reminds him of his mother. There’s something about those eyes. He’s sure of it. It’s in her eyes. He sighs. Sometimes he likes to imagine that she’s his daughter, some one of his own flesh and blood, that shares his interests, his hobbies, but then he quickly throws the idea away.
Holly has told him all about William and how much they loved each other. He feels jealous when he thinks of it. And then he wants to leave again, remind himself of the freedom he has… There’s a key in the lock, the door opens, Rebecca looks up and sees Holly walk in, she smiles at her mother. And Holly sees Rebecca and David and she walks up to him and gives him a little kiss. And then David thinks he should perhaps stay… just a little longer.
