“I wore those the day I married your mother, Scotty.” He once heard his father say. “And you will wear them when you get married.” He believed he would never see them again, because he would never marry a pretty woman, as his mother and father had imagined he would.
And then Kevin came into the room unexpectedly. Apologetic and nervous he handed Scotty that one little box, that would mean so much to him. Just a set of cufflinks, but it made his day perfect, because, to Scotty, they meant approval. His father considered this day as his wedding-day.

Scotty can see them, back in their square little box, and he feels guilty, because when Kevin gave them to him, he got needlessly angry. He had not liked the idea, that Kevin had driven all the way to Arizona to bother his parents, who had made their feelings clear. It felt as a way for Kevin to force his own point of view on them and on him. But now, it’s two days later. He can see Kevin’s action for what it was. A gesture of love, of trying to fulfill Scotty’s dream and unite him with his family.
FLOWERS
“You and Scotty deserve this night to be as romantic and memorable as anyone else’s.” From anyone else but Nora, these words would be melodramatic, but Kevin recognizes her love for him, her understanding of his feelings, her desire to treat him no differently than she would her other children. So, he holds her tight and wipes away her tears, he allows her to straighten his tie and he enjoys the scent of many flowers. Only when he sees how touched Scotty is, when he enters the living-room, does he realize that his mother gave him and Scotty their fairytale-wedding.
