Summary: Just a scene I feel should've been added on to the end of tonight's episode.
After Connor has disappeared in search of Philip, and Matt and Danny have driven off in pursuit of Ethan - or Patrick, perhaps, Jess isn't entirely sure what she's supposed to call him now - she realises that she has no idea where Becker is. He doesn't respond when she tries calling him over the comms system and she starts to worry. She can't remember exactly when or where it was she last saw him, but then she remembers making the announcement about an intruder being in the building; she hurries over to the ADD and pulls up the internal CCTV footage, scanning frame after frame until finally she sees him, lying on the floor completely still, and she swears her heart stops beating for a moment.
"I need a medic to corridor five," she announces into her earpiece once she's able to move from her position in front of the monitors. "Now."
She practically runs to him and falls to her knees beside him, placing two fingers on his neck to feel for a pulse. "Come on," she pleads, and she can already feel the tears forming in her eyes. "You can not do this to me, Hilary Becker. I save you from being blown up, and this is how you're going to repay me? Come on." There's something there; it's faint, but it's something, and when he wakes up - because he will wake up, there's no other option - she's going to have to commend him for his dedication to following orders. "Where's that medic?" she asks in frustration, but as soon as the words have left her mouth one appears around the corner, carrying a medical kit in his hand.
She stands aside to let him do his job, watching nervously as he fills a syringe with a clear liquid and injects it into Becker's left arm. After a moment or two Becker starts to cough and pulls himself up into a sitting position, leaning against the wall for support and rubbing his eyes with his hands. The medic says something quietly to him, and Becker says something in response; apparently whatever it was is all he needed to know, because he puts the syringe back in his bag and walks away, with just a brief nod of acknowledgment to Jess.
"Jess?" Becker's voice is barely audible but it catches her attention and she moves to sit down next to him.
"What happened?" she asks, staring at a point on the floor in front of her rather than risk looking at him. Even though he's okay, she's still only about five seconds away from bursting into tears, and she'd definitely prefer it if he didn't realise that. As long as she doesn't look at him, she's sure she can hold herself together until she gets a moment alone.
"I had him cornered," he explains, sounding a little out of breath. "He was holding an EMD to Emily's head, so I couldn't - I couldn't risk firing. Maybe if I'd had a proper gun, instead of one of these toys…" he starts coughing again, and Jess winces in sympathy; it sounds painful. "Then he shot me. More than once, by the feel of it."
"You were just lying there," Jess says, her voice breaking, and perhaps she isn't in quite as much control of her emotions as she thought she was. "You were lying there, and I thought…"
"Look at me, Jess," he orders, but she shakes her head firmly. "Jessica."
It's his use of her full name that finally does it, and as she looks up at him the tears start to fall hot and fast until she can hardly see what's right in front of her. He opens his arms for her and she all but collapses onto him, sobbing into his shoulder as he wraps his arms around her, one hand coming up to play idly with her hair while the other sweeps up and down her back consolingly. "It's okay," he murmurs into her ear. "I'm still here, and I'm not going anywhere. I promise. It's okay."
It seems to take an age for her to stop crying, but eventually she does and pulls away from him slightly, although she can't move too far with the way he's holding her. "Sorry," she tells him with an embarrassed laugh, and she wipes her eyes with the back of her hand. "I don't know what came over me."
"It's okay," Becker replies. "It's quite flattering, actually, having a pretty girl crying over you," he adds with a smile that Jess can't quite find it in herself to return.
"Becker, I," she begins, but now that she's started she's not entirely sure what it is she means to say.
He leans forward and rests his forehead against hers. "I know, Jess. Me too."
She closes the gap between them and kisses him softly, pulling back almost as soon as he starts to respond. “You just got shot,” she reminds him when he looks at her in confusion. “Not to mention the fact that we’re in the middle of the corridor. Anybody could walk past and see us.”
“I don’t care.”
She can’t help but smile widely at that, and he does the same, although she can still see the pain in his face. She stands up, brushing invisible dust from her dress, and holds out her hand to help Becker to his feet. “Come on, let’s get you to the infirmary for a proper check up.”
“Yes ma’am,” he says with a mock salute, and she hits him lightly on the arm, but she doesn’t stop smiling for a second.
He keeps hold of her hand all the way to the infirmary, and as soon as the medic has officially given him the all clear he looks at her triumphantly and kisses her again, properly. This time she can’t quite bring herself to stop him.
