Grown
Sirius remembers the first time he actually knew that magic was well, magic. It was one thing to have his mother muttering curses at the house elves; it was quite another for Sirius to do something himself. Nevermind that he never intended to turn his baby brother into a cushion. He only wanted the little squalling pink thing to shut up. He closed his eyes and wished, wished so hard that his eyes hurt. When he opened them, Regulus was covered in green velvet and had a tassel hanging from his nose. His mother sent him to his room and didn’t let him out until supper.
Now Sirius didn’t have to worry about his mother. He’d finally left. No more of her screaming madness, only silence. Mrs. Potter treated him like her very own and still ruffled his hair when he walked by her. Mr. Potter smiled at him fondly over dinner and let him haul a wreck of a motorcycle into the back yard. Sirius didn’t think about home much, didn’t miss it. Except that sometimes he’d sneak downstairs and pluck a green cushion off the couch and clutch it to his chest as he drifted off to sleep.
