I believe that all the style guides I use regularly specify "e-mail", so I've gotten to the point where I twitch at "email." But I'm sure there are style guides that say "email." I haven't checked AP, for example.
It's still a new enough word that both spellings are "correct."
The screens for the product I write sometimes have fields for providing an e-mail address. And sometimes fields for providing an email address. "Match the GUI" overrides "however you write it in the doc, be consistent". And makes us writers twitch.
Before working at the paper, I used "email." AP dictated I use "e-mail," and, after an adjustment period during which I used both forms on LJ, I completed the transition to "e-mail" in all instances. Even in e-mail ;)
I probably clicked the wrong one, as I do occasionally still use "e-mail." Everyone in the legal and collection industry, at least, seems to use "email" in correspondence, and since that's what I do all day, it's come to look more correct to me.
The ALQ website uses "E:mail," which gives me hives. And makes me wonder where anyone with the skills to be their webmaster could possibly have come up with it.
"E:mail"???? ::sigh:: GPO style insists on "Web site", which gives *me* hives. I mean, "Website" or "website" or "web site" but..."Web site"? It's like the worst of both worlds.
I can't handle "email" as a spelling, but then I spent four years being taught that my journalism professor was God and the AP Stylebook was the Bible, so that might have something to do with it.
