Hi, my name is Mara and I'm wearing the goddamn crankypants today. Got a problem with that?

Had to drop Yael off at school this morning because we missed the bus. (Totally my fault, not hers.) Anyway, we drove toward the school and I found a perfect parking space a block away from the school, we walked the block, and I dropped her off at the front door pretty much exactly on time ( Read more... )

There are an amazing number of Special Snowflake parents like this at the school across the street from my house, too. It's my understanding that there's no parking and no stopping or standing on our side of the street, in the sense that there are signs that say so. And yet almost every time I leave for work, I wind up with some entitled twit stopped dead in front of me.

Which I thought was annoying until last Thursday, when I nearly collided head-on with the woman pulling into my driveway to drop her kids off, without bothering to look whether someone was coming out of it.

My street gets plowed first when it snows, so I don't mind waiting for the lineup. (Okay, I don't mind much.) But blatant disregard for traffic laws? That's something else again.

tl;dr: Much sympathy and agreement.

::shakes head:: I just don't get it. I try very hard to minimize my disruption to the neighborhood around the school. I'm probably the only person.

So it would appear. Oh, and next to the school? The park where little-league football happens. THAT's fun in season, lemme tell ya. They're convinced the street is just a parking lot. And all I can think is "Your children's coaches are teaching them teamwork and sportsmanship. You are teaching them that your convenience trumps my right to access my own damn driveway. Well done!!"

Oh yes, we have the same problem in our neighborhood. Between the school and my house is a big soccer/baseball field/park and during various seasons, people will block driveways and such to park for their soccer game. I'm lucky that we're far enough away that we don't get it, but it's apparently very annoying.

Beekman's daycare moved from a cramped building with lots of outdoor space and a big turnaround for drop-off, to a wonderful big building with a insufficient playground and no practical dropoff spaces. I plot every morning and evening as to how I'm going to park for dropoff and pickup so as to avoid a) puddles, b) interesting things on the blacktop and c), when picking up, getting his stuff from the classroom before he sees me from the playground. *headdesk*

and I'm officially wearing the crankypants: my online pharmacy misled me into believing I had refills on my prescription until after they had gotten a faxed order from my doctor. So my pills won't arrive for at least 4 days.

Oh, who needs drugs anyway, right? ::eyeroll:: Good grief.

And yes, dropoff and pickup are a giant deal. Fortunately, the shul is pretty good, so long as there aren't competing events going on. Hebrew school is a DISASTER. I try to arrive at least 15 minutes early to get a spot somewhere nearby.

The biggest problem with the shul is that it's next door to NIH so there's no parking in the neighborhood on weekdays.

Oh, well, I suppose the biggest problem with the shul is the Special Snowflake Hebrew school parents who figure it's okay for them to park their car blocking other people and then sit in it until their kid comes out. Ugh.

Yeah, where we lived in SC some genius had built 3 schools next to each other, a primary school, elementary school and middle school. All had drop off areas, but traffic to do so spilled into the public street that was the only exit of our addition, and did so for most of the morning with staggered school start times.

Jedi had to fight that every morning to get to work. I'm glad I went the other direction. And I would pull out in front of the idiots to turn left, because it wasn't like they were going anywhere.

Worst, is that our addition was at most a 10 minute walk to school, and I'd no joke see people driving their kids to school in gorgeous weather most days.

Ouch, that hurts. That's definitely bad planning.

We're really too far to walk to the school. It's a bit over a 5-minute drive, but walking...hmm. I think half an hour? It's hilly and you either have to go all the way around via road or you have to take the winding path through the park.
