"Browncoats" was the affectionate nickname of the Anti-Alliance army, in the universe behind the series Firefly. Two of the main characters, Mal and Zoe were on the side of independance during the battle, and it's an occurence that is alluded to throughout the series--even the name of Capt. Reynolds' ship, Serenity, named for a lost battle in which he fought.
