A series of demonstrations known as Slut Walks have or will soon be held in many major cities. They started because of a statement made in January of this year by a representative of the Toronto Police that "women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized." I remember a number of people asking me why I wore a camo jacket for much of high school - the one time I DIDN'T wear it, I got at least 5 catcalls walking less from school to the local Subway sandwich place - probably more. (This wearing jeans and a t-shirt, but with very long hair.) I NEVER got catcalls wearing army surplus. It's about the only thing I could wear that would guarantee that jerks would leave me alone. Wearing ANYTHING else would attract unwanted attention.

a) I don't know if the long hair on its own was enough "female marker" to counteract the rest of the outfit.

b) That may also get back to the "men often target those they believe to be the least powerful in the social hierarchy."
