Best - maybe only - in-depth look at what Kaito felt after his Dad died that I've ever seen. With the way the manga was written, you don't really see what kind of profound effect that had on Kaito.

I just dunno why, but I think you're really the first person to really hit on the mark about why Kaito does what he does. Saddest thing to read, however, is the following passage:
You should have known, of course. It wasn't like you hadn't thought about it yourself, sometimes. All you'd have to do would be wait a little too long, open the glider a little too late... or not open it at all. It would probably be too fast for pain, and it would all be over.
