Summary: Well. He couldn't say he never saw it coming. An inevitability that everyone must face at least once in their life...
Note: Couldn't think of a title, so I went snooping through a Wisdom Quotes site to see if anything would pop out at me and...well...ahahahaha! This quote fits me perfectly! "If my doctor told me I had only six minutes to live, I wouldn't brood. I'd type a little faster." - Isaac Asimov
P.S. - Yes, this involves a character death. Sorry~!
Well. He couldn't say he never saw it coming. He gave weak smile at the silent grave where one of the few people who knew of his double-life and actually appreciated him as both Kuroba Kaito and the Kaitou Kid now lay buried. In all reality, if he were to be honest, he would admit that he'd been surprised when he'd gotten the news.
He'd actually come to think of Konosuke Jii as a man who would always be around--first for his father and then for Kaito himself...
But, he reasoned silently to himself as he pushed away the wave of sadness--bitter and genuine both--aside, Jii had been an old man. Too old to have to deal with this 'young master,' that was certain. Still, it was hard to accept. The only person who had a similar connection to his father that he'd had with Kaito was gone and somehow...it spelt the end.
Kaito took in a deep breath before straightening the lopsided smile into a sunny one that made him laugh a little as he bent over to study the marker.
"Na, Jii-chan," he said cheekily as if the old man were standing in front of him, "Don't think I won't keep at it. Even without you fussing about my performances, I'm sure they'll all go without a hitch--though I get the feeling that I'll be hearing your lectures over and over again in my head--just like Dad, huh?"
The magician stood straight then, giving the marker a disgruntled look. "Oi, oi. I'm still working on that. You don't have to keep rubbing it in, you know." He then paused, dropping a hand to his hip as he then smiled sadly. "But yeah...for now Aoko's fine--even if she's still a little out of the loop--heh...I think I should just keep quiet about it for a little while longer, what with her delicate condition...
"Ah, Jii-chan," Kaito said with a mock-weary sigh, "how my father juggled those three things at once was something I never got to get out of you. Guess it's a sink or swim scenario, ne? In that case--" He lifted a hand to shake a finger at the marker. "--you be sure to tell the old man that I'll do it and will definitely not follow in his foosteps this time. Got it?"
Silence was the only answer.
"Good." With a smart nod, Kaito then grinned widely, determined to keep all bad thoughts and negative emotions from showing. "I guess it's time to see if I can pull of this on my own after five years of being so pampered. Jeez, Jii-chan, you spoiled me--"
"Kaito!"
The alarmed cry had the magician start suddenly, spinning away from the grave to shout back, "Aoko? Are you okay?"
"I won't be if we don't get to a hospital RIGHT NOW!"
Kaito nearly tripped over his own feet at that, eyes bugged out. "Here? NOW?" Tuning out the insults and curses his wife then chose to shout at him, the young man sprinted over to her, only looking back to the marker to shout with a hand up in apology, "Sorry, Jii-chan! Duty calls! I'll stop by next year with an addition! Promise!"
"KAITO!" Aoko howled at him, though he remained undeterred and just laughed at the situation.
He had a feeling Jii and his father were laughing along with him, too.

Cute little one-shot...again, forgive any typos that might be numerous...had to stop to fight with younger sibling while this was being typed up (ALL I WAS DOING WAS FUCKING TYPING WHY THE HELL IS SHE SUCH A BRAT?!). So yeah (ow, my elbow...)...*siiiighs* Fun times, yes?
...and I didn't mean to kill off Jii...it just sort of happened D: Poor old man...
Hope you all enjoyed it anyway!
