Three Passing Thoughts

Stolen from redbrunja. This meme looks fun because it's from the fanon angle (too often it's just canon that gets clawed to the death over discussed):

Give me a character/pairing from any fandom I participate in and I'll give you one fanon that I don't agree with.

I've been catching up on podcasts of This American Life and a recent episode featured a ( Read more... )

Good one! I mostly read Zuko/Katara fic, so I mostly know Suki fanon through that particular lens. Most "five or ten years later" fic has Suki married to Sokka, and the mother of a horde of children. I lean a little differently. I love the Suki/Sokka ship (I ship Sokka with a lot of people: Toph, Yue, and even lately--God help me--I see the possibilities with Azula) but I think that Suki would have a lot more trouble "settling down" than people give her credit for. She's the leader of her Kyoshi-based fighting group; Sokka's a natural leader for the Southern Water Tribe. They are both practical individuals that I could picture amicably parting just because the logistics don't work (unlike Zuko and Katara, who are so idealistic and incredibly stubborn that they would make it work, even if it killed them). I'd like to see Suki appear more often in Zutara fic as a female friend to Katara who is not necessarily married to her brother. Also, fic where Suki hasn't figured out yet the balance between love and responsibilities herself ( ... )

oooh, good point. And I have to admit, I've been mentally guilty of that as well. I do really like the idea of Suki and Sokka having a very reasonable, adult break up.... (and then missing each other like hell and going 'fuck it' and getting back together.)

(unlike Zuko and Katara, who are so idealistic and incredibly stubborn that they would make it work, even if it killed them).

Well said.

And yeah, I would really like to see more of Suki and Katara being friends.

Okay, strange as this sounds and though I like Tokka quite a lot--I can't think of a single convention that's accepted/used by a large enough portion of the fandom to be considered "fanon" (but I haven't read Tokka fic in a while). What are some of the conventions?

I need one of those Akaname dudes to come round my house...

Orihime/Ishida

Okay... It's taken me so long to reply to this because for whatever reason, I keep thinking about it. My biggest beef with the Orihime/Ishida fics I've read is that they make Ishida too considerate and long-suffering. Ishida's prickly, borderline dislikability is one of the best parts of his character. (I think there's a better than fair chance that Orihime/Ishida might happen in canon).

Ohhh that profile comes from the obakemono project doesn't it? :DDD I can spend hours at a time on that site. My current fave atm are these, they're just so creepy. Perfect ghost-story fodder.

Uhhm, for the meme ... how's about Toph/Zuko? :)

The pic comes from the obakemono project, yes, but I transcribed the text from the book. If you like the website, you would definitely enjoy the latter. I love those wind demons! There's another super creepy demon whose name escapes me at the moment, but who can possess you by crawling in through the usual places (eyes, ears, mouth, etc.) but also under your finger nails. I've been toying with the idea for a short, dark urban story around that.

I would do Toph/Zuko but... I've only read about two Toph/Zuko fics and they were both by the same author. I don't feel qualified really to comment on the fanon (though I do wish Toph and Zuko had had more friendship/bonding canon time in S3.)

Liked the poem...very gentle and sweet. You got anymore Gin/Ran stuff I can read? :)
