The Swayambhunath Temple was old. Not as old as the vampire who'd taken temporary residence there, but it dated back to the fifth century which made it the oldest religious site in Nepal. Elijah had thought about going somewhere more remote than Kathmandu, but his dietary needs required more people if he didn't want the monks to become targets ( Read more... )

Jenna was in a great mood as she aimed her camera at a monkey who was currently sneaking down to steal an offering. She thought of shouting out a warning or a command for the monkey to stop but an earlier experience had revealed that this sort of behaviour and act occurred quite regularly. So much so that the monks didn't bother stopping it any more. Or at least most of them didn't as she had seen some of the younger ones try once in awhile while the older ones stood back and looked amused. At least she saw the amusement as she had an eye for that sort of thing. She saw the twinkle of amusement beyond the mask of serenity ( ... )

Elijah was used to being watched. He didn't often notice it, and could manage to slip through places invisibly if needed, but he had to try. Otherwise...people looked. Blending in had never been his family's strong point. Still, he wasn't completely used to feeling some sort of magnification of the sensation.

He turned slowly, scanning the people until he saw the young woman with the camera watching him. His head tilted a little, and he gave her an inquiring look, a curious smile curving his lips.

Jenna froze when he suddenly looked at her, catching her watching him, and a sheepish smile crossed her features as she lowered her camera a little more while glancing down. Then she peeked at him again, her smile changing to an apologetic one before she gave a little wave.

Then she turned slightly, pretending to go back to her task as she lifted her camera to pan over the temple, looking for another picture to snap. Of course it was more than a little difficult to concentrate when she knew he was looking at her now.

People didn't in general wave at him--except sometimes children--nor did he in general approach them unless he was hunting. But the smile and wave were so charming he found himself moving slowly toward her. American, he guessed, though possibly European. She had a more American way of dressing, though. Possibly Canadian.

He'd know when she spoke.

"Can I help you with something?" he asked, when he was close enough to catch her scent above the rest thronging around them. He figured he'd start with English, then slide through the other major European languages if she didn't speak it--but it was the best to start with given most travelers seemed to speak it these days.
