Humans use words to define concepts, so when we use the word in other ways the orignal context confuses us.
So words like intelligence have many different meanings. However i think(yet another concept) that teaching a program to "Think" is much more useful than one that scans a database and applies a maths formula(I.e a chess computer).
With programs that learn we end up with much more useful programs, hence the use of Expert systems.
ah but i digress into a subject i was never over good at.
"ah but i digress into a subject i was never over good at." lol.
I agree with you. But when you think about it thinking is just making a decision based on memory or past experience and making the best choice based on that. Thus one must then wonder at what point is a human using memory and a computer scanning memory (like chess) different?
Complexity. The ability to design one's on search criteria.
To a degree, Alvar was an experiment in personality. I specifically tried to monitor what alvar 'knew' from what I'd experienced when I played him. For the most part, he started of completely blank.
Spend 5 minutes walking through town. You process more information (auditory, visual, olfactory, tactile) in those 5 minutes than is likely contained in every chess game every recorded.
How many movies a year do you watch? How many can you pull quotes from? How many people do you know, and yet recognise when they change their clothes/hair/posture/have an accident?
I suspect most of our sub-concious decisions (when to walk, when to interrupt a conversation, what noise means "death is immenint") are based on past experience. Most concious decisions, by most people, dokn't appear to be. ;)
That was me. You may have noticed that all the URLs on LJ have changed, this is to stop a big security hole. But it means Firefox thinks they are all different sites, so I have to log in each time. >:(
Really really sorry... I had only found out about the 21st about a half hour before you rang (although in fairness I was told a couple of weeks ago, just forgot about it!) and you know about my phone problems! Was going to email you when I got in. Yup. Sorry. But I'm on for Memoirs of a Geisha next week!
Ooops.... sorry, I'm terrible at this social engagement thing! I blame my phone, or lack thereof... *sigh* It won't be fixed until next bloody Thursday. Would you mind emailing me your number again?
