Because the way Julia’s saying vase sounds a lot more like heart, and both claims he knows to be true.
Wow. The way you did that, the way we can so perfectly imagine her sobbing into Brendon's chest and whimpering about the fact that Brendon let Ryan break her vase when she really means heart, it's just perfect.
And this; Brendon fights her tooth and nail for right to see his kids. That made me so teary-eyed. I thought it was a particularly profound moment of this fic. I just.. I could imagine this, so well, and even though he and Ryan are about to be wed, Brendon seems like the type of person who would never, ever neglect his children, child, whoever, merely because of a divorce. It just releases this spark of Brendon being paternal and stubborn because he just loves his offspring, these beautiful kids that he's created so much; the fact he's willing to fight so hard for them makes me delirious with happiness at the fact that maybe Brendon would never, ever let himself be the insensitive bastard who flips off his children without a

Gosh, I'm so pleased you can see it as vividly as I could in the moment I wrote it. I was afraid afterward (upon the umteenth re-reading) that it wasn't as powerful as I'd originally imagined, but I didn't dare touch it because I know that sometimes an overly critical eye rob anything of its emotion, lol.
And yes. Brendon. I really didn't want to make him into the 'bad guy' here - partially because I don't think that would have made for a good story, and partially because I don't see it in his real life character. He had a very strong, family-oriented upbringing and although he's rebelled against certain values his family held, I'd like to think that would be one that stuck. He certainly wronged Julia, but he's not a heartless person.
Tbh, I've never really seen Brendon as the man-child he's often characterized as, but by the time of the divorce in this fic, he's well into his thirties and a responsible adult. Fun-loving still, I'm sure, but responsible and mature, lol.
Thank you for the note about my header. It's fixed now. I

Oh...oh, wow. This is so amazingly written! And I love that song. When I read the part where Ryan tells Julia about the vase, I realized the connection. The last line is so sad but it's perfect. Adding to memories!
Hehe. I love the song too. And I did mention it was blatantly ripped off, didn't I? Blatantly. Everything from their three daughters to Julia's listlessness to wedding and the broken vase. Even the walking into the water at the end.
If I were to publish this, I'd owe Death Cab all sorts of money, lol.
But thank you for your compliments to my writing. And thank you for reading.
Yes, and thank you for your advice on that matter! I hope you don't mind that I didn't write an entirely new scene but rather worked a few extra paragraphs into an existing one. I do thing it made a difference ,though, in giving the reader a clearer impression of their family dynamic.
