Final chapter discussion post about Jack and Stephen.

'Has she got out of the mole?' cried Stephen, at a considerable distance. 'Has the battle begun?' Reassured, he said, 'I would not have missed it for a hundred pounds:
that damned fellow in ,Ward B and his untimely fancies -a fine time to cut one's throat, good lack a-day.'

I'm so on the side of the crew when it comes to Stephen and Dr Ramis.

And Stephen not taking the court-martial seriously *shakes head* At least he is not completely ignorant of the fact that Jack is apprehensive.

Now, Dr 'What's that big square white thing tied to that tall wooden thing' Maturin. For all that you profess ignorance of matters nautical, here you are saying things like And why only courses and topsails with this light breeze? That one is even backing her maintopsail

I shall be keeping an eye on you, mister and seeing whether it's all sham...

I think that Stephen tends to forget a few things the more he immerses himself in natural philosophy. *g*

He is certáinly interested, understand what he is seeing...? Still, it gives Jack a good chance to explain things dear to his heart. :D

Jack and Stephen stayed where they were. Dawn found them under their rock, with Jack steadily sweeping the Gut - calm now, and deserted - and Stephen Maturin fast asleep, smiling.

Now I only wonder what made Stephen smile; certainly not some bug he found before he went to sleep. *g*

Yes, this is where we talk about the court martial, because after all, it is about Jack and Stephen. ;D As you say, Stephen makes light of it at some point, but he also sees that it affects Jack very much, contrary to what our dear commander is saying.'Oh, I do not mind it,' cried Jack. 'How you lie,' said Stephen affectionately, but within his own bosom
I so felt for Jack when he bumped his head, the poor dear.

I was quite touched that Jack was concerned that Stephen was worried about being court martialled and sought to reassure him -

"but obviously in this it is only my conduct that is in question. You have nothing to worry about, I do assure you, upon my word and honour. Nothing at all."

Jack sounded very much like in the earlier chapter when he assured Stephen that the Master would never have him flogged, not him!

I seem to remember that middies were generally bent over a cannon and caned rather than flogged. It wasn't as public an event as a flogging, either, though I don't know if the other middies were made to watch or not.

The foremast jacks, as we all know, were another matter entirely. Gauntlet, anyone? -wince-

(and sorry, I am The Perpetual Late Commenter. I went to Sakura-Con this weekend, though, and only now got to a computer...)

Good to see you around: :D Anyway, I think you are right. Middies do not seem to be flogged, they are generally made to "kiss the gunner's daughter."

The con was fun?
