Jo shot the clock on the wall a quick glance and wondered where the last hour had gone. There hadn't been a lot of traffic... She shrugged, giving that fist a half-angry, half-teasing look.

"For you? Never."

But even as the words were spoke, she wiped her hands on her apron and untied it with ease. She had planned to usher anyone out if they stayed, but the few costumers who had shown up that evening had wandered off on their own. It made it easier for her to justify closing the Roadhouse for an evening so she could go do something as frivolous as ice skating with Dean Winchester.

"I gotta grab my coat. Are you going to be warm enough?"

She knew exactly what that sentence meant, and she hated it. She hated everything about it.

"Come on, already?" She shot him a mock disappointed look and reluctantly planted her hands on his sides. She had no plans to give up, but she knew it would take a while to get past this.

"Just get used to being on your feet in 'em, don't worry about falling right now."

"I'm tryin'." He was going to fall so many times, he knew it, and Jo was so going to tell Sam and he'd never live it down. At least if she told Castiel, Cas would show some genuine sympathy about him possibly being hurt.

He shuffled out onto the ice with her, both hands on her shoulders, and a look of stern concentration on his face. "This is stupid, why do people think this is a good idea? Why did I think it was a good idea?"

"You wanted to be a winter fairy." She giggled, easily staying on her feet and skating backwards without a problem.

"Look, you can't completely concentrate on it." She paused here, watching a couple skate by out of the corner of her eye. "You're supposed to use smooth movements."

"You're so lucky I need you right now, or I'd be pushing you on your ass." He was dragged along with her and he looked up at the couple skating by, frowning a bit at her. This was such a bad idea, he really can't see how he thought taking her to do this wouldn't complicate things more.

Still, he slides his hands down her arms to take her hands. "Okay, fine, you guide me then, because otherwise I'm goin' over."

She had a snappy reply ready - until Dean moved his hands, and suddenly she had to be glad she had grabbed a pair of gloves before leaving. She dropped her gaze to his skates, watching for a moment before shaking her head.

"You can't walk in these things, stop tryin' that. Uh." She chewed on her lip. She had forgotten how she actually learned a long time ago, but she figured teaching a little kid was different than teaching a stubborn adult.

"Think of it like sharpening a knife?"

"Sorry I'm trying to walk, I guess I forgot that's not always what you're supposed to do when you're standing up." He gave her a sarcastic look but tried anyway to not take steps but the move forward in a glide rather than a shuffle.

He nodded a little at the analogy, and really it was a pretty decent one, but he kept hold of her hands anyway, squeezing them any time he felt like he was going to fall, but so far so good and he gave her a little smile.

"Where'd you learn how to do this anyway?"

She looked back down at his feet, using the pretense to decide if she wanted to answer that. She knew she didn't want to lie to Dean. She shrugged a second later and bit back a sigh.

"My dad taught me. I was really young." She half hoped he would stop asking questions, but if her mother and exes hadn't stopped him, she doubted that this would. She knew the less he thought about it, the quicker he would pick up ice skating, or at least she hoped it would help, but she had no desire to keep his mind off of skating with more of the type of conversation they had been stumbling into all night.

"Are you getting the hang of it?"

"Yeah?" He didn't honestly know why people wouldn't talk about people who were dead. He was willing to talk about his own father and mother, the part of him that was still Daddy's Little Soldier would sometimes brag about his dad, and the part that was Mommy's Little Boy would talk about her like she hung the stars and the moon for him, but Dean coped with death in a different way to a lot of people. His dad's death he didn't face until Sam came at him with emotional conversations, and then he worked through it quickly enough, but Sam's death he couldn't take and he sold his own life away for him. It always depended on the person he was mourning ( ... )

She took the opportunity to flex her hands and gave him more space. She wanted to avoid talking about death in public, because when people overheard such things they tended to listen too closely for her comfort. Her life was not for strangers and she had no desire for sympathy from anyone either.

"I've heard it's easier to learn when you're young." She smirked at him, skating lazy circles around him with her hands on her pockets after he had stopped. "You don't suck though. You haven't even fallen on your ass yet."

"Yeah, I guess most things are easier to learn when you're a kid." It was a small relief he'd been young when he'd learned how to pronounce Latin words, otherwise he would have flat out refused to take it in properly. Really, Sam was still better at it than he was.

He watched her skate around him and smiled a bit at how good she was. "Now I'm gonna, 'cause you're a jinx." He was steady, though, and for a few moments he was fine, managing to get a little distance going, until he turned to look at her, shaking one foot out from under himself and slipping to fall hard on his ass. "Son of a bitch, that stings!"

She knew she shouldn't laugh. What she shouldn't do had never stopped her, and she laughed as she skated over to him. She slid to a stop at his feet, barely able to resist the urge to stop hard and shower him with ice.

"Come on, I know for a fact I'm not." She made a split-second decision not to accuse him of being distracted by her, and rested her hands on her hips.

"You say everything stings. Wimp."

"You totally are. Help me up, dammit." He was pretty damn sure she was part of the reason he fell, likely because she totally was a distraction, but he was past caring as long as he could get up off the ice that was quickly freezing his ass.

Getting back up onto his feet, Dean let out an irritated noise, dusted off the back of his jeans, and gave her shoulder a light nudge. "You're supposed to be keeping me on my feet, missy."

He gave her a smile, though, and neatened his jacket. "I swear, I'm gonna freeze my ass off out here soon."

"I can't help that you fall fast." She punched his shoulder, lighter than she usually would hit him, and skated one more circle around him, only to make sure he wasn't hurt. Nothing seemed broken or sprained. He would be fine.

She gave him a smile and shrugged.

"You'd warm up if you got movin'."

He grumbled at her, watching her skate around him, and he was damn sure she was just showing off now, but her comment gave him an opening for teasing, and he snagged hold of her hand, giving a light tug to it.

"You're gonna have to get me movin' so I warm up then," he murmured, his smirk smooth and playful, though it never quite reached his eyes these days, not like it used to, before everything started to become all-consuming and too heavy a weight to bear.

Jo already had plans to go back to the Roadhouse and get drunk and all of this only served to cement them. She should have come alone. He seemed so worn.

"You're the one bein' slow!" She protested and yanked her hand away, holding them at shoulder level with a slight smirk. Letting him lean on her had helped him learn, but she needed a break and he could use a bit more practice without her.

"You wanna move, come get me."
