That spooky time of the year is upon us! And in tradition to the eerie time of the year, we are happy to bring you another Mandalus born holiday! It's a bit like a holiday and an event all in one. Let's get started!
• Morgeis' Walk
Morgeis' Walk is a two week holiday celebrated in Mandalus every year. The holiday is the culture's version of holidays such as Day of the Dead, Halloween, etc. It takes place every October 22nd - November 5th. It is a very serious holiday to those in the city and will be taken seriously by all NPCs.
During this two week period, lanterns are placed along the sidewalks and streets and all NPCs wear masks over their faces. While the player characters are not expected to do this, they may receive wary glances and almost have superstitious reactions if your character does refuse to wear one!
• The Lore
This holiday is in honor of the Demi God Morgeis of the old Mandalus lore. Morgeis was half-god and half-mortal, cursed with a body that appeared skeletal in nature. As such he wore long robes and a mask that covered his entire face. His role within the old stories was to ferry the dead to the afterlife. Every year, for two weeks, Morgeis would gather the restless spirits that were unable to cross at the point of their own death. On the final day, celebrated on November 5th, Morgeis would ferry them over the waters to the next world. Any spirit that did not go with him that year would have to wait the following year. It was known as "The Time Morgeis Walked Among Us", shortened to "Morgeis' Walk."
To help the spirits, people would light the way by placing lanterns through out the city. They believed the lights would point the direction for the dead to go. They also wore masks in order to hide their faces from the potential restless dead.
• What To Expect
1) Homes, businesses, and all buildings will be draped with the colors red, black, and grey.
2) Lanterns of any kind will be placed around the walkways, roads and sidewalks. These can be from a typical lantern, a flashlight, to a Jack-O-Lantern. They will all lead to the edge of the districts facing the water (Venetian and Old Town).
3) NPCs will wear masks at all times if they are in public. They are masks of any form, size, and shape, as long as it covers their eyes/cheekbones.
4) At night, there will be a fog that rolls into the city that will send a gloomy look about the streets.
WHAT ABOUT HALLOWEEN you may be asking. Well, on October 31st, that is entirely up to you! Your characters are more than welcome to host their own Halloween parties or Trick-Or-Treat, or terrorize some kids in costumes. Just keep in mind what will be in store on that night...
• The Event
Here is where it gets fun.
Due to the nature of Morgeis' Walk, players will be able to tell their own horror stories. As with any event, this is entirely optional, but Morgeis' Walk is a holiday that will be happening regardless if your character finds themselves at the subjection of the upcoming horrors of Mandalus.
A variety of things will be happening during these two weeks for your characters to experience. From ghosts, to monsters, to zombies, there should be something that your character can encounter to realize just how terrifying Mandalus can be at night when there's no one to turn on the light!
• Paranormal Activity
Do you all remember the
Tides of War event that ran in September? It's after effects are surfacing in a completely different manner now! Those who died in this event will be back to make life hell for your characters, regardless if they were heroes or not.
Those picking this option will have their characters be haunted by the restless spirits of the city. If your character has a building from home, it is up to the owner if it will be haunted (however others living there do not have to experience the haunting if they do not want to). The progression of events is thus:
- It starts off as simply seeing shapes/shadows/people in the corner of the eye. Maybe - whisper or two, the odd sensation of being watched. Your character will notice something isn't quite right.
- It then increases to seeing full body apparitions, people in the mirrors, physical contact and then poltergeist activity.
- No blessings or ghost hunting will remove the spirits. They will disappear on the end of the event, having been "ferried" off to the afterlife.
• The Monster Mash
Due to the event that will kick start Morgeis' Walk and the event, monsters will be rampant through the city at night. The dark corners of buildings and businesses, the empty parks, and even the creepy alleyway will lurk with terrors that are looking for it's newest prey. Keep your guard up! If the monster isn't defeated by the end of the night, then it will disappear at daybreak and return the following night for more terror.
The fun quirk about this option, is that characters are able to bring monsters from their canons to fight once again at night! There is a sign-up sheet at the bottom of this post that will ask for details of your monsters, how to beat them, and a space for their appearance. Get ready, monster hunters!
• The Walking Undead
No creepy event is complete without a little undead problem. As with the other options, during the night, the cemeteries of Mandalus will come to life with the creeping corpses of those past. However, it isn't limited to just the cemeteries! Remember how
The Entity banished the surviving members of the Serpent Army? They will be back to take on the Spaceport and Junkyard by night.
Of course, all zombies can be taken out by the typical means. You may want to avoid setting them on fire. No one wants to deal with flaming zombies!
• The Event Timeline
A bit lost on when things are happening? Here is a quick sum up!
- October 22nd: Morgeis' Walk and the event begin! The event will be kicked started by everyone's well known
foretelltheend with a bang. From this point on the monsters, ghosts, and zombies will start appearing at night along with the fog. The details of 'how' and 'why' will be explained when the post goes up, as we want to keep the narrative a surprise!
- October 31st: Any Halloween shenanigans that you would like to are more than welcome on this day. Keep in mind that NPCs may not join in on the celebrations on this day.
- November 5th: Morgeis' Walk and the event end! The Entity will address characters with any questions or complaints they may have.
• IC City Changes
Tying more into the fall out of The Tides of War event, Mandalus is changing just slightly! The Underground is still accessible to everyone with the various new entry ways for exploring, so make sure your character gets every chance they get. However, that's not really news. What's news is the skyline change:
As you can see by the updated map, a large chunk of the Business District has been walled off. Construction is happening in this area of town, and the barriers that were around the four districts during the previous event will keep anyone from entering it. Over the next several weeks, characters will be able to see buildings being erected. The purpose of this will be revealed in the coming future! The maps of the city will be updated shortly so that you can see the size of this area compared to the others.
