It's been a long, long day. Edward's in class or else he would have asked if he had wanted to go out for a run with Carlisle. Since Edward is in class, he is just going to go home, wash this damnable inkstain out of the one new dress shirt he has and camp out in a chair until nightfall.
The briefcase gets dumped in the hallway. The shirt is stripped off soon after, heading for the bathroom sink.
He knows enough for the light tone to fail completely.
"Never will you ever have to endure anything like that again," Carlisle's hand stays rested on Esme's shoulder, but the tone is anything but timid here.
Her smile falters and she wonders exactly what he is referring to. Edward said that he hadn't given Carlisle details about her life, but his tone seems to indicate otherwise.
"I wouldn't expect so," she says, trying to keep her voice from shaking.
"I remember most everything, Esme -- " which is true, but not the answer she needs. Or wants.
Carlisle exhales. How to explain? Is there an explanation?
"I'm not sure what kind of answer I can give you. I really do remember most of my life with the kind of clarity that I've never tried to define." This is not going where it needs to go. "You...stood out. Is that so hard to imagine?"

Carlisle's hand drops after another second, leaving them standing next to each other.
With Esme in her bathrobe.
Carlisle's brain flickers again.

Thoughts that her mama would say are rather unbecoming for a proper young lady.
"Carlisle? Can I ask you something?"
As soon as the words are out of her mouth, she knows they are a mistake.

Carlisle tries for a smile. "I can appreciate the necessity of rebellion."

She's very glad that she didn't ask him if he found her attractive. No doubt he had seen much more beautiful women in that time.

All the women you've been with.
She's grateful that Edward isn't home to hear her thoughts right now.
