In Character Information
character name: Rachel Phantomhive
Fandom: Kuroshitsuji
Timeline: Pre-Kuroshitsuji manga/anime -- the day before her and Vincent's death (alternatively, the day before Ciel's tenth birthday).
character's age: Late twenties to early thirties (29 in-game)
powers, skills, pets and equipment: As a lady of high London society, Rachel has plenty of experience with the social scene. She knows how to organize parties of all sorts, work the crowds, make connections, and keep and maintain them as well. Other than this, she doesn't possess any other notable skills that could possibly compare to her husband. Even though she is more independent than most London women of that time, her skills and abilities are still very limited.
This changes when she comes to Anatole. The Mist will grant her
knowledge replication. Knowledge replication allows her to acquire the mental and physical abilities of anyone she is in proximity to. She can't retain most of the knowledge she acquires-- physical abilities, of course, she cannot keep, and extensive mental skills such as the knowledge of a foreign language or some complicated subject can't stay with her. Simple skills, however, like gun handling and sword fighting (which she will likely acquire from her husband and child), as well as cooking and technology knowledge, she can retain.
canon history: Canonly, not much is known about Rachel's childhood, except that she was born with asthma, a condition that continues to persist even into her adulthood. Angelina Durless, or Madam Red, was (and still is) her younger sister, and the two of them were very close as they grew up despite their personality differences. When they were younger, Rachel was the more sociable and popular one in comparison to Ann, who was shy and liked to stay home to study to be a doctor.
One day, the charming and charismatic Earl Vincent Phantomhive called on their house to visit the two girls. These visits continued for some time until finally, he proposed to Rachel. However, just as Rachel had fallen in love with Vincent, so had Angelina, causing the younger sister much grief upon seeing their happiness. Despite this invisible rift between them, Rachel and Ann were still as close as ever. Angelina was there as an assisting midwife when Rachel gave birth to her son Ciel, and Rachel was there for Angelina when she got into a terrible carriage accident. It took Ann's husband, unborn child, and womb. During her recovery process, Rachel was there nearly every day by her side to tend to her and help her cheer up.
Once Ann was able to get out of the hospital, Rachel invited her sister to come over for Ciel's tenth birthday party. What she didn't realize was that it would be the last time she would see her sister, husband, child, and friends. The Phantomhive mansion would mysteriously burn to the ground that night, killing everyone except for the heir to the Phantomhive legacy, Ciel Phantomhive.
personality: Madam Red once called her sister a person who "never puts on airs". Rachel is very much so that sort of person, blatantly different from many of the women of London society in that she is very open and honest about her feelings, never choosing to hide behind lies or falsehoods. She has a delightful energy about her that revels in life-- both its winding paths and struggles. A cheerful and optimistic woman, Rachel is a beautiful person in both appearance and soul, but she is hardly her husband's trophy wife. She is as proud as any noblewoman would be of her spouse, but it is not an arrogant pride-- it is a loving pride uncommon in that era that allows her to be even prouder of him and her family because she knows that she and Vincent support each other, and that he recognizes her independent spirit.
It is that same love and respect for him that drives her to support and love those around her who share that life with her. Rachel's passion is to see to the people she cares about. She is always quick to notice is something is wrong, the smaller nuances and body language not lost to her eyes. Understanding and empathetic, she is not affected by things such as slander or gossip, preferring to hear from a person's own lips on how such-and-such happened, loyal and faithful to what she knows instead of what is believed.
Rachel, for all her pleasantries, is always quick to defend that which she holds dear to herself, a mother's rationality and temper guiding her emotions in much of what she does. She isn't afraid to be tough with the people she cares about (keep it a secret, but she used to spank Ciel when he was little whenever he ate too many sweets!), and isn't afraid to give them a gentle nudge in the right-- or what she believes to be right-- direction.
There's a silly, childish side to her that only her sister really sees-- Rachel used to be Angelina's incorrigible boob-squisher when they were younger, if only to pull her out of a self-deprecating or somber mood. She still is able to be that animated, not afraid to be physical and hug, touch, or pat someone when she thinks it is appropriate. It is a balance to the soft and demure side of her that her husband usually sees, a lady with refined grace and kindness, excellent manners and etiquette, and impeccable taste.
why do you feel this character would be appropriate to the setting? Rachel's death was sudden and tragic, and once she finds out what happened to her, she'll likely have regrets that she was taken away from Ciel when he was so young. Being able to see him and take care of him again would help redeem herself in her own eyes as an adept mother, and be able to bring a little cheer to the whole place.

[When the Forge turns on, Rachel is holding it in her hand, so the camera is obscured for a few minutes as she talks. Her voice is a little strained, but otherwise she speaks to herself calmly.]
Well, you knew this day would come, Rachel. It isn't as though Vincent can keep you absolutely safe for the rest of your life. The bathroom storage closet is the last place anyone would think kidnappers would hide. So gather your wits and start looking for a way out.
[She sighs softly.]
And please, dear God, let them not have taken Ciel as well.
[Rachel finally turns her attention to the device in her hand, giving anyone who was watching a good look at her as she inspects it. She lets out a curious "Hm!" before dropping it into her satchel, rendering the video useless again. Soon after there is the clickclack of her shoes as she starts looking around the room-- and then the sound of the door knob turning.]
...it's unlocked? Are they careless, or are they confident that I can't leave this building?
Well, I suppose either way I should take a chance to try and escape.
Third Person Sample:
Rachel had been more than a little surprised when she'd tried the door and found that it actually opened. Usually in kidnapping situations, it would be locked, and it was a little disconcerting to know. If her kidnappers were careless and-- God forbid-- they'd taken Ciel as well, then she worried for her son. But if they were confident, then there might be some serious manpower behind all this, which might indicate a serious threat to Vincent's life and line of work. Either way, she didn't want to linger.
As she opened the door, she felt that familiar pain in her chest was setting in again. By now, though, Rachel was used to enduring it, so she pressed on undeterred. She would not allow herself to stay helpless in this strange place, least of all let her asthma make her an easier target. So she walked down the hallway as quietly as she could, keeping her eyes and ears open for anyone who might be coming towards her.
As she walked, she took notice of the other doors that neighbored the room she had woken up in. They were all numbered, and soon she realized that this place looked exactly like an boarding house, with numerous rooms to let out to people. It was a little strange, now that she thought about it. The farther she went, the less likely this whole situation seemed to be a kidnapping. The people walking around weren't dressed like lackeys, weren't running towards her to capture her again. In fact, they were normal people, provided that their clothing was strange to behold. And they were all friendly, or at least looked it. One even called good morning to her.
"And welcome to Anatole!"
Rachel paused in her tracks after the man left, her brow furrowing. "Anatole...?" She'd never heard of such a place near London-- indeed, in all of England.
...just where in the world had she been brought to?
Anything else?: Nope!
