When crushes die

Aug 20, 2007 20:33

I just watched Diary of a City Priest, a DVD I'd finally located (used, former rental copy, licensed but no case or artwork, man this thing was hard to find) after a year or so of poking around. It's hardly a blockbuster, but it was a moderately interesting look at both the day-to-day realities and the inner life of a middle-aged Catholic priest in ( Read more... )

Hmmmm. Sam Neill. He was wonderful as the villan in the Anthony Andrews version of Ivanhoe, sexy as Reilly, Ace of Spies, charming in any number of Antipodean productions, creepy in The Piano, and now he makes a good drop of wine.

OH GOD YES I TOTALLY APPROVE.

I have ALWAYS had a crush on Sam Neill, and he was fabulous in Ivanhoe, wasn't he? In fact, we borrowed a whole bunch of A&E stuff from a friend, and one of them was (a different) version of Ivanhoe, and it was in no way as wonderful as that one with Anthony Andrews and Olivia Hussey and SAM NEILL, and I really want to get that one to see again but I don't know where or how I possibly can.

Looks like there's never been a DVD release, but you can find it used on VHS if you're really motivated.

OMG did you see how much the NEW copies cost??!?! The CHEAP ones are $140!

Well, we have a crappy VCR, and we have actually only used it once since we got our new big screen, because the movie looked really not so great...but...it's not available on DVD. And it's such a fantastic movie. So, um, I bought a cheap-ish used copy.

Oh, GOD, the climax of this one, when Bois-Guilbert looks into Rebecca's eyes....

Maybe I'll have a chance to see it some day. :-)

And no, I hadn't looked at the prices... HOLY CRAP. Some people are just freaking NUTS, you know?

Hi! This might have been the only time I cried in a movie!

I cry ALL THE TIME at movies, so I'm no judge. But! Oh! That was just, oh!

And yet another failing of the A&E version, in that the clear motivation in What Happened (*is oblique so as to avoid spoilers*) is not in that one! (As I recall, it was alluded to in the book, which I sought out and read after seeing this, but it wasn't so - oh! heartbreaking! amazing!)

Hello and welcome. Not to worry. Pull up a chair. Put your feet up. Stay as long as you like. :-)

A&E = Arts and Entertainment (cable channel). They showed Hornblower, too. Their version of Ivanhoe is too long (miniseries) and kind of meh (IMHO).

I wrote a uni paper on the differences between the 1952 and 1982 movie versions compared to the book

I knew there was a reason I liked you.
