Madam Malkhos and Madeline went sort of honey mad at Christmas dinner this year. Naturally I was remind of the story of Sigmund. When, at his sister Signy's wedding feast, Sigmund refuses to sell his magic sword to his brother-in-law Siggeir, Siggeir ambushes the party, killing his father-in-law Volsung and chaining up Sigmund and his nine brothers

Probably, Wagner found that this story might overcomplicate the already complex plot which took four operas to tell.
