Any generic kung-fu movie of the Golden Age is superior to all but the most carefully crafted and impeccably executed Hollywood product of any era.

In doing a little reading, I gather that the "Nine Killers' in the title were all recognizable to Chinese audiences as spoofs or homages of various other HK films. So the seemingly completely random plot might have made a smidgen more sense if I'd known that the four random guys One-Arm-Behind-His-Back killed in one scene were a nod to "The Heroic Ones" or whatever.

On the other hand, I've seen hundreds of these things, and I didn't recognize a single spoof character. It's not like they were aping "The 5 Deadly Venoms" or anything.

And, moreover, WHY was he going around killing them all?

Like all the greatest films,,,this one left me with much to ponder.

I this feeling quite a bit during my excursions into the cinema of the far east:

"Huh...I'll bet if I were Chinese/Japanese/Thai/Etc this completely random, inexplicable event would make perfect sense!"

But I think being in the dark is more entertaining.
