You know what? Lamentations is the best book of the bible ever. And I get tired of taking crap for saying that, too. Yeah, Lamentations is sad and often depressing (it's called "Lamentations," does it sound like it's going to be a laugh a minute riot, people?) I had someone tell me once "Of course Lamentations is your favorite book of the bible ( Read more... )

Also, people who say "Smile!" are egocentric, uncaring motherfuckers who have no concept of personhood beyond themselves. NO ONE OWES YOU A SMILE YOU GODDAMN PRICKS. That seriously pisses me off, especially from a feminist POV, and I can't say much of anything about it without shaking with rage. The next time someone says it to me, I hope I can shoot back "Fuck you."

Last night a girl at work said it, and I replied "Does anyone ever smile when you say that? When you think about it, it's kind of a dickhead thing to say, isn't it?" and then I changed the subject really quick before she could snap back at me. She gave me a look, but she let it go. I still think "Fuck you" would have been more appropriate, but you know me, I have to TRY and make people realize why what they said pisses me off. Because communication has worked so well for me in the past, right? Bah. A pox upon you people with your smile requirements.

I think Christianity could do with a lot less niceness sometimes, too.I do, too, but then you'd have those people ( ... )

You so often write what I don't have the bravery to write. I love this post, love it and relate to every single part.

I'm glad I'm not alone. Or crazy. You and Rachel are two of the smartest people I know, so if you can relate or if you don't reply to this with "You're crazy, freaky bitch" then I must be onto something.

I don't know enough Christian theology to respond with something intelligent, but I'm glad you're working on it.

I first heard "Children Go Where I Send Thee" on a Christmas CD, and have loved it ever since.

Also, I really should read Lamentations, apparently.

When I heard that groove from "Children Go Where I Send Thee" at the end of "Love Came Down at Christmas," it was like magic. Jars of Clay...they get it. They were one of the hardest things for me to give up when I gave up my Christian music, because they somehow know how to weave pop culture into their music in a way that resonates so much with me. At one of their concerts, we were kind of all standing around in the pit, not connecting with the music much, and then the band announced that they were going to sing a great gospel song to try and liven things up a bit, and they launched into an acoustic version of "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and by the end of the song people were swaying and dancing and laughing. that was one of the best gospel moments I've ever had at a concert (God bless you, Cyndi Lauper). I always thought Jars of Clay understood that the gospel isn't about beating people over the head with the bible, it's about finding joy and grace in the everyday, about finding light and life and hope in the midst of the ( ... )

I was just having a chat with a friend last night about how frustrated she was that people in her church didn't get what would be helpful to her in her depression ... that they were so uncomfortable with anger with God, questioning God.

Not that you would find that in the prophets. Or Job. Certainly not.

Not that God could tell if, instead of yelling at him, we choose to stuff it down and smile really big (so people don't give us crap) and pretend nothing's wrong. Because, you know, honesty isn't a Christian value or anything.

I'm reading a book about prayer right now. In one place, it suggests that God arranges circumstances so that we'll struggle with him - that for some reason, he seems to want that. Not that that makes it feel better or anything - I just thought his suggestion that maybe God wants people to respond the way we're responding was fascinating and a little encouraging ( ... )
