Surprise! 6A/LJ Didn't Follow Through

Jun 03, 2007 15:21

I learned today in innocence_jihad that a lot of the suspended journals are still missing (which I already knew, since I know some people who had their journals suspended who weren't reinstated and aren't planning to come back to LJ...they've moved on to GJ). More details below.

LJ has not done what they said they would. Fictional journals and survivor journals ( Read more... )

survivor, abuse, warriors for innocence, strikethrough 2007, drama

Why censor some and not others? I'm not getting the logic here and it's starting to annoy me.

I have this theory, based solely on conjecture.

Whoever was suspended and got duly, duly complained about (perhaps with threats - "you suspended my friend/community _____, and until you pull your head out of your ass, I'm not giving you any money/letting you show any ads on my LJ and telling my friends to do the same" - they got reinstated. Everyone else doesn't rate highly enough to garner the meager investigation resources.

Yeah. I didn't even know what was going on when my journal suddenly disappeared, but I found some people in fandom who explained everything to me, and they were nice enough to send emails on my behalf, and coupled with the help of my friends like and terminal83 and aguynamedgoo and edtheripper I had over 100 people send angry letters about my journal. I'm betting that's why I was reinstated. I just got an email to that effect, in fact. But I know it's not just fandoms and pedophiles who are being suspended...I know it can happen to anyone and some legitimate survivor journals are still suspended, and I wish more people would still want to fight for those people. It really could have happened to anyone, and it's unsettling when any company starts caring more about ad revenue than about its customers.

Thank you for the info post.

I saw lolita_icontest when it was up. All this journal did was post icons from the 1962 and 1997 movies based on the book. If someone had just looked at the comm, they would have seen that it had nothing to do with pedophiles.

So when was a ban placed on Lolita and its movies? That is what I would like to know.

I wish more people would still talk about this. So many people want to pretend it never happened and stop discussing it, and they complain about the "wangst" of fangirls. My journal never did ANYTHING wrong or promote any kid of illegal activity, and even if it did, LJ used to be a place that allowed the discussion of illegal activities as long as it was general and not specific and not meant to encourage someone to go out and commit crimes. they're turning into this kind of PC place where people can't even discuss literature like "Lolita" without fear of banning. I'm sorry so many communities got caught in the crossfire. We'd never be able to discuss books like "American Psycho" and "The End of Alice" like we did in my "Crime and Violence in Literature" class with the kind of mindset 6 Apart seems to be taking to the discussion and community standards on LJ. I seriously think the only reason I got my journal back while so many did not is because I had over 10 people write angry letters for me thanks to my friends in fandom. I ( ... )

Unfortunately, LiveJournal does have a rule against "erotic" photos of minors, and it doesn't note any exceptions for images from mainstream movies. So I suspect that this comm would have fallen afoul of LiveJournal's rules, regardless as to whether Strikethrough occurred. But overall, yes, LiveJournal's response was way overblown.

No problem. Thanks for reading. I hope it helps people to see that LJ/6A are moving in an unsettling direction.

Thanks for keeping track. I'll link to this in an open post on my journal. It's so damned important that people know and stay tuned!
