Stays Question

What do you all think about horizontal boning at the bust of 18th century stays? My 1790 stays are pretty much done now, but I have yet to put in any horizontal boning. I know that some stays have it and some don't. Does it really make that much of a difference in terms of shape? I'd love to hear your wisdom ( Read more... )

I think it depends. It makes no difference on me, but people with more chest than me say it makes a difference for them. So, very dependent on your figure, I think!

Hm... Good to know. I'm not particularly busty, but I think I'll give it a try and find out. Thanks for the help!

I've found it makes a huge difference. Not only does it help give that lovely rounded front that you see in the 1780s/90s, but on me the horizontal boning adds a significant amount of bust support. For reference, I have a very narrow ribcage and quite a difference between my bust vs. underbust measurement. In my previous 18th century corsets, I had a problem with my bust slipping down during the course of wear but the horizontal boning adds enough support to keep everything in place. My suggestion would be to try it out and see if it makes any difference for you.

Interesting. When I was wearing the stays around last night I did notice that I tended to slip down a bit. So I think I will give it a go! Thanks for the advice!

I tried doing the horizontal boning one time, but I couldn't tell any difference, so I took it back out. Mostly it just made it hard to store my corset because I couldn't roll it up anymore.

I'm going to give it a try, but good point about being able to take it back out. Thanks!
