I feel like crying a little for both of them. He's hurting so deeply - and so wrong about what River needs and what he has to offer. But she's tried long enough and hard enough by now, she'd be crazy to keep doing it, even if she knows that he wants it deep inside...

Yes, it hurts. It hurts me to write it. But I couldn't see them together before Mal dealt with some most of his (not inconsiderable) issues. I had to take them seriously. My only fear in all this is that he's seesawed back and forth so much, when he finally does realize the truth no one will believe that he has.

That part of the movie might be one of my favorites. Mal the joker, Mal the big brother-type, Mal the best friend, all of it subsumed in a rage so cold you could see the icicles forming on his fingers. It's not often that you see someone in such a dark place that he can devise something that hideous. It was necessary, of course. But simply knowing that he was capable of coming up with it must have roiled his stomach.
