up in the hills above Bradford, outside the napalm factory

It being the first Thursday after the Paschal full moon last week, I caught the train up to Bradford for a few days to attend LX 2009, this year's Eastercon - believed to be the sixtieth such event (modulo a semi-mythical convention which may or may not have taken place in Kettering in 1957).

The RepRap is a remarkable project - all we need is to hook one up to something like this http://www.muellerr.ch/engineering/laserscanner/default.htm - turn it on, and we'll be knee deep in replicators before you know it.
I'm looking forward to the time when, when that crucial widget breaks off your doohickey, rather than ordering an excessively expensive spare part, one can download a open source design from the web and print it off that afternoon.
Maybe it's time to invest in PLA..

We settled the LX issue, with a sword fight. The 1957 Eastercon did happen.

And we actually had an '57 attendee turn up. :)
Glad your talk went well. Are you going to put the slides online this time?

The slides are online here (last years' are here). Thanks very much for lending me your Klein bottle, by the way - several people came up at the end to have a closer look.

"Flying cars are a very bad idea" :D

Lovely slides. Really wish I'd made it to that one.

Programming looks to be well underway for next year already. If you enjoyed this, and want to volunteer a third popular maths lecture, please drop programming at Odyssey a line (assuming Judith didn't grab you already).

Judith spoke to me already and jotted my email address down in her book, so I'll have a think about what I could talk about.

Did Ricardo Pinto happen to mention when the final Stone Dance of the Chameleon book would be out?

It was launched at the convention, as a matter of fact. It's called The Third God, and he talks about it here, on BBC Radio Scotland's Book Café programme (starts about 13 minutes in). He seemed like a nice chap. I wonder if we could persuade him to visit Coventry at some point...
