This is utterly adorable! I love how it is not that he dosent believe the street urchins should get free hats, but that the gruff inspector cant be seen to have any sort of compassion.

Thing is, if 1830 france was anything like 1940's australia, it was the done thing for men to knit- clothing was expensive and so most people made their own. My grandpa has a story about how in his airforce days most of his mates on the train home would be knitting away.
