You've made lots of interesting points and it so happens that I agree with all this. Yamamoto is just one of those lovable characters that will knock the sense of someone depending on the situation literally a mirror image of me but let's not go there, ;).
Let's just put it simply, the battle with Gamma made Gokudera see the Yaoi Light light, knowing that he needs to trust Yamamoto the guardians.

Yeah, Yama turned out to be surprisingly good at Jesusing. First Squalo, then Gokudera; makes me wonder how things might have turned out with Genkishi. ALAS. And yeah, he was particularly effective at knocking sense into Gokudera; I'm so glad it seems like for once the lesson is actually sticking, heh.
