I know it doesn't make sense if you put it on paper

Cameron's been on the island for roughly a few weeks when he spots him.

In the days since his arrival, a part of him has felt strongly that he should be looking for Mark, although he suspects that's because he knows that's what Tyler would be doing if he were here. Where Tyler and Divya want retribution, though, Cameron's calmed down over the last ( Read more... )

The truth of the matter is: the Winklevii have never been Mark's greatest concern.

Even during the heat of the depositions, while Mark scribbled away on his legal pad, looking up only to correct a fact or to offer his own account, the Winklevii have never been the core of the problem. Have never managed to do anything more than mildly irritate Mark Zuckerberg. It's vaguely insulting, of course, that the brothers would actually accuse Mark of stealing something from them, would actually claim that facebook was their idea, but at the end of the day, disputes over ownership of intellectual property aren't unusual, nor uncommon. Maybe they really do think, dull as they are, that the site they proposed is the same as facebook, that all social networks are more or less one and the same- in the end, the cost to Mark himself is minimal. Easily forgotten, just like their emails and requests for status updates ( ... )

This has to be one of the few times in his life Cameron could honestly say he has no idea what he wants. Oh, there are broad notions, future goals, but in this moment, looking at this guy, he doesn't have a clue. It's incredibly galling. He somehow feels that's expected; he's always been quicker when it comes to matters of tact, but when it comes to possessing actual conversational direction or the certainty required to surge forward at such times, that's been Tyler's province, not his. Tyler knows what he's doing, what he wants; Cameron mostly just pretends. Right now, he doesn't even know what to pretend to ( ... )

"You want a settlement of several million dollars," Mark says shortly, reflexively, more bothered by the fact that the average American would be inclined to force Mark to give it to them than the fact that the Winklevii feel that they're owed some due. But he holds his expression still after the statement, no malice in his voice, nor even accusation. Just a statement of fact. This is what the Winkleviis want, at least as a collective, at least as a pair. "But several million dollars is only so much paper, here. Not even. Even paper has some value ( ... )

"No," Cameron agrees, his gaze unwavering, "I haven't." At least thanks to Eduardo, the idea doesn't catch him completely by surprise, but it's impossible to keep some measure of shock from registering. It's not about the money, it's never been about the money, but the idea still guts him: several million dollars. Millions. He scoffs, a note of bitterness creeping into his tone even as he manages a wry half-smile. "And President Summers said our imaginations were running away with us when we said it was an idea worth something."

He has to wonder if it's nice to be that far removed from it all or if it's really just a different mess a few years down the line. Not like a settlement settles anything; it's not even a real admission of guilt, of anything, only a confession that it's simpler to pay them off than get dragged through further litigation and that this is something Mark can afford to do, all because of an idea that they were told wouldn't really amount to anything. One way or another, it has. In that respect, he supposes, they ( ... )
