I'm glad you ended up enjoying The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, I may have to blow the dust off my copy now!
And as far as I'm aware Lisbeth Salander is in the later installments of the Millennium trilogy.

I'm not familiar with crime/mystery/thriller novels so I don't understand the hype even though I have read it. It is most certainly a good book and I had several 'omfg wtf that's crazy (in a good way)' moments. But what makes it such an international sensation?

I honestly am not sure why it has become so popular. I mean it was good but not sensational, imo.
