Ino shivers slighty, as chilling breeze skims and raises goosebumps all over her skin, despite the thick fur coat that she's wrapped in. It's snowing, and Ino knows that she should be somewhere warm and comfortable and safe, instead of standing in the midst of half-frozen commoners (that can mug her anytime) and crispy white snow (she knows of a person that died from cold last winter). She tightens her grip on her coat almost protectively, as another gust of wind howls and rattles the shingles of nearby houses ( ... )

The night is bitter cold, the kind of cold that sucked into your bones, cuts through your skin, smothers you in its subtle embrace until you fall, lifeless from its touch. Living on the street, clothes only as good as what he could find, Naruto knows what cold can be, and what cold can do to you ( ... )

At first he thought it was paranoia, but after the second time losing and being found again, Naruto was sure he was being tailed.

Damn, he cursed inwardly. Her boyfriend? Or something worse...?

Regardless, he upped his pace. Alright; if Mister Chivalrous back there wanted to play cops and robbers, Naruto would give him a run for his money. After all, these were his streets, and he knew every nook and cranny from one end of the slums to the other.

Slowly the crowds began to thin, giving Naruto more room to maneuver, but more room to be seen as well. Still, the sickly thin moon provided little light and he ducked effortlessly into an alley as a small group chattered past, pressing himself tightly against the wall with an ear tipped open.

The game was about to begin. Time to see who he was really up against.

Shikamaru was not exactly a people person. He would much rather be off doing his own thing than be in a crowd, anyone he knew would tell you. Thus, seeing him out and about on a frigid night, at a festival no less, would be likely induce a heart attack into his friends. He himself had to constantly remind himself why he was here as his feet crunched through the thin snow below. It beats a night at home with mom. It beats a night at home with mom. It beats a night at home with mom. True, the cold was biting and some of the people were slightly less than sober, but as long as he kept repeating his mantra to himself, he was fine ( ... )

Ino curses inwardly when another one of those scraggly ruffians bumps into her (what does she looks like, a tree?), and she nearly jumps when she feels cold fingers brushing against her hand as the boy (young man? How old is he?) mutters an apology before disappearing into the crowd without a backward glance.

She stares after the long-gone figure, recalling the oddly coarse voice that cut through the frigid cold air to deliver that one word. Ino shakes her head to dispel the lingering interest she has taken on a complete stranger, one that she is quite sure she won't be seeing, or even recognise, in the future. These commoners look the same to her nowadays. What would Shikamaru says if he's right here with her?

Ino smiles at the memory of her childhood friend, mouthing out 'troublesome' to herself before she even realises it. It's been a while since she last saw him ( ... )

As he approached his female friend, he couldn't help but wonder just why she was out here. She wasn't exactly an open rebel, publicly defying the Akatsuki's every decree, so it wasn't dangerous per se for her to be here. It was just... incredubly unexpected (almost as unexpected as it was for him to be at such a place). She was the only daughter of the Lord Yamanaka - if she wanted to celebrate the New Year, certainly there were more appropriate places for her to be than in the Town Square surrounded by drunks, vagabonds, and Akatsuki lackeys at every turn ( ... )

Ino blinks at the unusually formal way Shikamaru addresses her, before her mind catches up with the fact that they are in a public place. Akatsuki's eyes and ears are everywhere. Shikamaru might have been bold enough to approach her (despite the possibility of someone recognising him for his allegiance), but extra precaution has to be taken to avoid unwanted exposure regarding the nature of their relationship. Remembering her place, Ino straightens her back regally and holds her head high, shoulders squared underneath the thick embrace of her coat ( ... )

Suddenly, there is a cry from the center of the town square, and then the resounding echo of the countdown! A small firecracker is set off as the people of Konoha began to cry out the numbers.

"FIVE!... FOUR!... THREE!... TWO!... ONE!... HAPPY NEW YEARHugs and kisses are shared all around and people shout and cry with joy. Firecrackers and magic makers fill the sky with wonders. Color is exploding everywhere. There are so many dazzling sights, it is almost hard to keep up ( ... )
