In many ways, I have no control over how bizarre my life is. In a lot of other ways, I kind of ask for it ( Read more... )

So, what's the "Civil Cell"? majormagik July 9 2005, 04:09:58 UTC
Three days ago, I happened to find a cell phone about half a block from a bus station. I wasn't sure whether to walk two blocks to the police station or one building farther to the Verizon office. As I was going to try to catch a bus within a few minutes - and I was reasonably sure Verizon would charge a "return fee" - I took it to the cops.

I understand the climate we live in post-911. I really do. But has anyone else noticed that no matter what is said and no matter who says it, about half the cops on the planet seem to think everything is nefarious?

"What's your name?" "Do you have ID?" "Where did you find the phone?" "Do you know the owner?" "Do you live in Bristol?"

"Do you know I'm going to try to catch a bus?"

My completely random giving aid to the public good was answered with more or less a shrug by the cops that I had flagged down. A woman waiting for a bus was "run over" by another much larger drunken man. I spent the rest of the time waiting for her family to arrive to take her out. She wasnt seriously hurt but the cops gave me a "well she's not hurt bad." and took off. Guess they had more pressing issues. *shrug*

Was working customer service at a bank phone center when a customer called wanting to know who to call to deal with the fire in the kitchen of someone in the building across the alley from them.

A few years a go, back in Austin, when I was an oncology pharmacist, I had a phhysician stop by and ask me to talk to one of his patients about keeping his medications in the proper bottles. seems he was stockpiling his THC capsules in a bottle marked something else. Anyway I agreed to have a chat with the fellow. Nobody warned me what I was walking in on ( ... )

this story, by no means, compares to the 'man with no face', that just. . . OMFG, that just takes the heart out of a guy and makes him useless; but I was encouraged to share, nonethelessIn 1998 I worked for a guy who ran a shop that did embossing, silk-screening and engarving and such, but also shared a building with his son who operated a budget mortuary service in the same building, and all too often, in the same space. So it was not unheard of for me to often have to move a casket or two around to get to my chore du' jour (usually the cardboard variety on a gurney; but usually in a few hours they were removed and onto a better place, or whatever (they were out of my way, at least ( ... )
