Our discussion today is the theme of identity in the first half of season two. I do believe that James Duff himself has mentioned in several interviews that this is a very overt theme of the season (pardon me, I don't have links to sources). Do you think that Duff and his writing team have successfully explored this theme? Is this a theme that you' ( Read more... )

I thought that they did really interesting things with the theme for the season, but I really haven't felt as if they've really managed it without stumbling a few times at least - at the risk of stagnation. I think they brought forward interesting scenarios and situations and questions without necessarily answering or resolving them, which oddly enough - works for this theme and is understandable within the frame view of the theme since "identity" isn't something that's just claimed/gathered-together and DONE with, if that makes any sense? Identity tends to be some vague sort of constantly shifting and changing thing throughout a person's life, and I think that's the part of it that I've felt them address the best so far this season ( ... )

The idea that "identity" is a moving target - that WILL change as time or circumstances change was also really apparent this season.

Yes I agree. And I appreciate that they touched on this.

and I think that's something she knows, and that a lot of her "loudness" in the early half of the season is her version of a shield/mask for her self-doubts, so she's developing the confidence necessarily to fill in her new role and carving a niche for her own identity.

See this is really where I hope that they take the Emma's storyline. I could totally understand her arrogance and "loudness" as you put it, were it a veil for her insecurity and ambition. Also, I'd really love to see Hobbs take on the role as a mentor for her. She's the DDA that we (the audience) have seen working with the MC team the longest (going way back to season 5 of TC) and I think it would be great for there to be a positive student/mentor relationship between them.

Don't apologize for your comment! I totally appreciate the lengthy response. :)
