145 - IT'S THE FINAL COUNTDOWN [Video]

Jan 23, 2011 13:12

This. [The shot is of the neighbourhood, first one way down the street, then the other, then to the house that West and Billy have occupied for the port. The camera's a bit shaky, as West has already had a few drinks before busting it out.]

This is what I fought for, what I would have done anything to protect.

[He moves into the house. SO ( Read more... )

[Billy has been out getting the shopping, like an awesome househusband, but he comes in just in time for the tail end of that entry. He catches enough of it to figure out that West is angsting, so he puts on his sexy West face of the day.]

Hey, you okay, Henry?

[West shoves his port iPhone aside and stands to greet Billy with a wan smile.] Of course, Billy. How was the shopping?

[Billy hefts his bags, giving a slight shrug as he does so.] Eh, you know. It was... it was good. I bought stuff. [He moves to the kitchen table and sets the bags down, before turning to West, dusting his hands off.]

This is nice. I mean... living together. I mean, I know we already kinda live together, but, what I meant to say was... it's nice to live together, in... an actual house, and not a floating space prison.

Stuff? [That smile becomes more genuine as he follows him into the kitchen.] Just what I was having a craving for.

It is. I never realised the extent to which I missed this... day-to-day normality. [He begins to put some of the newly purchased foodstuffs away.] It's... almost a shame we'll have to return to the Barge soon.

[Morgan is either very touched by what you have to say, or she's very horomonal, or both. Have sad face.]

[It's okay, West. Her pregnancy weirds her out too. She rubs one of her eyes briefly.]

...We should talk. Whether sometime here, or after the port.

We should.

...

Are you even able to leave your brood for more than five minutes here?

It is beautiful.

But all things like this require some sort of sacrifice. Not by the people in them...but by the people incapable of enjoying them.

I understand all too well the meaning of sacrifice. I lived for my country, for England. I fought for her. All I wanted was to ensure that civilisation stood a chance.

I did the same. This, all of this, even if I did want it, would be closed to me.

But appreciation of it is what's really lost here. At least to most.

They should be grateful. This is the first port that's felt real. It's some... assurance that the real world still exists.

You promised them women.

Yes. Because women meant a future.

So you promised your men they could rape the first women that showed up for the good of tomorrow.

After the first waves of Infected passed through and we hadn't seen a survivor in weeks, I found one of my men with a gun his mouth. He said he was going to kill himself because there was no future. Even if we fought off the Infected, even if they all died, what did we have? Nine men, and all we could do was wait to die ourselves.

I had to give them hope, so I said what was necessary. I moved them to a more secure location, and I sent out a broadcast for survivors. I never thought women would arrive.

I understand.

I sit here and think, even if I don't have my daughter, and my crazy tenants here, but I have a wife, and so much of the things that I had before the war. I think... I should have fought for this. This is how the world should be, this is what you should have.

Instead, in trying to survive, I just made it worse.

But other people take so much for granted.

This is the life I've never had. I devoted everything to my career, thinking... one day. One day I would retire and have this. It never panned out as expected.

I used people the same way I accused you of having done. Different in execution, but I regarded them as... a means to an end. Survival makes desperate creatures of us all.

Things never quite pan out as you expect.

It does, but how much choice do we ever have? How much... option is there, when we've got to survive? We might have used people, but we protected people too. I think.

In trying to give them a future, I led my men to their deaths.

[Pause.]

But your daughter... Is she well? Did she survive?
