She had been following him, even if he was pretending to ignore her. She knew the present in the boring box knew she was there, knew he was watching her in return.

Her hand trailed along the edge of the table he was sitting at. She had seen him with the woman who wasn't entirely inside her head, seen him with her artist in her gallery.

The box had hurt her painting.

She didn't like the box.

She wanted the present inside it.

"What are you looking for, Ricardo?"

He spared he a brief glance before he turned back to the books.

"You never answered my questions properly. I have no reason to answer yours."

He turned the page. This brat was strange and irritating and, when it came right down to it, she made his skin crawl. The other night had proven that it was impossible to get anything useful from talking to her. He wasn't going to play games. On the off chance that she would give him something other than cryptic nonsense, he would talk. If not, he would go right on ignoring her.

"Why should I answer you? You're just a box." She made a thoughtful noise, staring at him intently. "And you should answer my questions, even if you and Susan don't want to listen to me, you should."

She made a childish noise, then an abrupt gesture that slammed all the books on the table closed. "After all, you want my help and this is my house."

Ricardo stared at the closed books for a moment. This was a tantrum. He was no good with tantrums. Tantrums were someone else's problem, which he generally ignored until it went away. But that wasn't going to work this time, was it?

"I'm not a box," he said, turning to face her. "If you would help me, I would be grateful, but you haven't answered me before and you've just said that you won't answer me now, so I doubt that you will. I don't have time to play with brats."

He turned back to the desk and opened the book he had been working with, flipping through to find his page again.

Kari was not in a particularly good mood.

The plan had been simple; comb the library for anything useful in the books. If nothing else, they had to have some kind of context for what this house had been before it became...this.

If it had been anything before now, that is. It beat wandering around exploring, anyway; she'd already done for days now. Nobody had even been around when she'd decided to do this, as far as she knew.

Regardless, she'd only managed to get through a couple of shelves before the shift happened; luckily she'd had her duffel bag around, so changing outfits hadn't been a problem. What was a problem was that being four years old apparently made browsing a library a difficult challenge. She couldn't reach most of the shelves, and getting what books she could read out proved an annoyingly slow and awkward task compared to before ( ... )

Ricardo would have ignored her altogether if she hadn't spoken, but now he looked up from his work. Tiny girl. Pink and frilly, traditionally adorable. Even had... what were those, fox ears? Carrying a huge tome that he wouldn't have tackled, never mind a four year old girl. It was the perfect storm of everything Ricardo couldn't take seriously.

He swivelled around in his seat to give her a dubious look.

"You'll have to find someone else to read to you. I'm busy."

"Huh?" Kari could swear she got dumber as a kid. It didn't help that this person was, as all adults were at this size, ridiculously big.

"Oh, no no, I'm just gonna read this." she held up the book, with a bit of difficultly. "I wanna see if I can find out anything about this place by readin' the books here."

Surely this person would appreciate her efforts to find out more about this place.

Ricardo's dubious look turned even more sceptical.

"You can read that?"

She couldn't be older than five. He may have gotten a slow start on reading and writing because of his strange upbringing, but even children in Regnum were only starting to learn at that age.

"Don't get your hopes up," he added. "Most of the books here are unhelpful."

Even if she could read at whatever painstakingly slow pace a five year old could manage, he would hate to see her wading through all that when there was little of relevance. If nothing else, he would hate to have her sitting in here sounding out all the words for hours on end while he was trying to work.
