Mello stopped in front of the doorway as he entered the kitchen, taking a moment of pause to acknowledge the room's other occupant.

Tim, wasn't it? It had been a while since he'd seen the kid, and the last they had met, the resulting conversation hadn't been an especially involved or meaningful one. The lack of possible speech on his own part had made that rather difficult.

Well, he supposed he could make up for that now.

He hadn't been seeking out company, but he didn't particularly find it undesirable enough to be worth actively avoiding. He was hungry, and right now, that took precedence over any need for privacy.

He smirked as he approached the kid, placing one hand on the surface of the counter as he stared for a couple of seconds. "Hoping something will put itself together for you if you stare hard enough?"

As much as Tim tended to try to turn off the 'constantly on alert for people coming' part of his brain, habits just died really hard. And this house had brought it back full force.

So when Mello spoke up suddenly, Tim wasn't remotely surprised to find himself alone. Though a part of him was a little taken aback by his ability to speak again.

He smiled to the older male, though it was a bit humourless. "Weirder things have happened," he said dryly. "I hear you're doing a bit better."

"Weirder things, perhaps, but here?" Mello gave a dry laugh in response to the kid's comment. "This place hardly seems to be intent on doing us favours." He glanced over towards the pot of stew cooking on the stove, narrowing one eye as he stared at it for a couple of moments. "Unless you'd count that."

Mello somehow doubted that it did count.

He turned back to face Tim, still smirking. "So have you been speaking with the rest of the house about me, or is that an attempt at a joke?"

Tim grimaced at that. "Fair point," he said. Suspiciously, he looked over at the pot. At part of him was still tempted, but he'd rather try his chances with his own (lack of) cooking skills. "I don't think I would trust that, so yeah. Not much in the 'favours' department. Though at least there's food in the fridge."

Tim smirked faintly, and turned his attention back to the counter. "Was it that bad an 'attempt'?" he asked, knowing full well the answer.

Kari had just been intending to make some stew. She had a few supplies; her plan had been to mix them in with the food left in a cold, icy limbo in the fridge. She'd eat the resulting stew, and if something burst from her stomach in some nefarious plot on the house's part, well, she'd just have to be sure and stab it to death. There were no food sources in the house that she could find, and her supplies would only go so far.

Only to find the first person she'd met upon her arrival. What was his name, Timothy? "Tim, right? I'm not interrupting anything, am I?"

She had her duffel bag, but it seemed lighter than before. For that matter, she also had her kukuri resting in a leather holding strap around one leg. She seemed remarkably cleaned up compared to last night, with significantly less dust on her person.

The duffel bag and knife were clean too.

"Tim, yeah," he greeted with a smile, once he looked up at the girl in the kitchen. It was a little different to be dealing with someone in the middle of the day like this. Maybe they'd have a chance to get acquainted a little better now; any allies he could make were invaluable.

"But no, you're fine. I was just trying to figure out food," he said with a laugh that clearly meant that it wasn't going quite to plan. He gave her a faint once over, making note of the changes, especially now that they were in a more relaxed situation.

"You held up alright, last night?"

"Oh, yeah. Got chased around by some wall-crawling things and met a nurse with no face. Did you know there's a hospital waiting room in the basement?"

She smiled, looking over the array of ingredients. This seemed simple enough; she could easily help him make some...some...

...it occurred to Kari she hadn't cooked anything that wasn't a potful of stew in months. Possibly years.

"...so, you like stew?"

Tim winced faintly at that. "Yeah, I've seen it. Can't say it seems all too welcoming, though." Not that anything in this house was. "At least you made it okay, anyway." Being chased was a lot better than getting hurt.

He was, admittedly, a bit surprised by her next question though. He blinked faintly, and looked up at her before he smiled sheepishly. "At this point, I'd take a meatloaf made with tofu meat substitute." He stopped out of the way. "If you can make anything better than the 'raw ingredients' stage I'm stuck at? You're more than welcome to do it."
