There's an odd-looking man in the entry way, shuffling in his particularly hunched manner first to the umbrella stand, then to the table with the flower arrangement, inspecting each item he encounters thoroughly and carefully and silently. He draws a line in the dust on the surface of the table with the tip of his finger, then studies the grime with the thumb of his other hand pressed up to the front of his teeth.
Anyone who observes this scene would likely think, from the tableau presented, that this newcomer is completely wrapped up in his own thoughts, oblivious to anyone else nearby. But Beyond Birthday is a man who is always watching.
