"Might Have Been" (by Grantland Rice)
A day or so ago, I went looking for this poem by American sportswriter (of the late 19th and the 20th centuries) Grantland Rice whose poetry seems fairly typical for his times, but I'd been searching for the wrong title.

They Gotta Eat....
Himself is out and about, having taken a half-day to do some personal and very necessary errands.
He's been complaining about gnats flying around, and since they don't spontaneously generate it stands to reason they were coming for something.

Himself tells me Little Grey Lady shows up regularly and that he feeds her at least once a night, but if I'm awake and about the house in the middle of the night she doesn't respond to my taps on the back door window glass, something she used to do so I have to suppose the schedule has changed. Bolting
Before turning in for the night, I went to check the back garden for Ms. Little Grey Lady; didn't see or hear her, and I was debating whether to tap the window glass, when there was some movement of the arbor vitae nearest the gate to himself's container garden, and a large doe exploded across my field of vision. Ho-HO! Found A 'New' Nighttime Visitor
Usually on the even-numbered hours during the night, the little grey cat will show up looking for a meal and if I'm awake I'm happy to oblige.
This morning, the big male cat woke me up, wanting attention and wanting a bit of food and when he does this I don't make him wait for the breakfast hour: going hungry is one of his two big, big fears. ( Read more... ) -
